Monday Morning Box Office Report: Despicable Me Doubles Up, Pacific Rim Defeated by Grown Ups

It’s disappointing but not unexpected. Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim fell short at the box office this past weekend after being dealt crushing blows by two dependable sequels. Despicable Me 2 added another $44.8 million to Universal’s coffers as it topped the box office for the second week in a row. The movie is basically neck-in-neck with Monsters University right now as the summer’s top animated movie but will likely overtake the Pixar flick before long. Grown Ups 2 opened in second with $42.5 million, making it a bit of a comeback for Adam Sandler after both That’s My Boy and Jack and Jill underperformed. Poor reviews clearly did not discourage Sandler’s fans. Meanwhile, debuting at #3, Pacific Rim did not bomb but it also did not attract many mainstream moviegoers, ultimately proving that most of the hype was confined to the internet. The Heat and The Lone Ranger rounded out the top 5 with the latter dropping a disastrous 62%.
