Monday Morning Box Office Report: Despicable Me Doubles Up, Pacific Rim Defeated by Grown Ups

It’s disappointing but not unexpected. Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim fell short at the box office this past weekend after being dealt crushing blows by two dependable sequels. Despicable Me 2 added another $44.8 million to Universal’s coffers as it topped the box office for the second week in a row. The movie is basically neck-in-neck with Monsters University right now as the summer’s top animated movie but will likely overtake the Pixar flick before long. Grown Ups 2 opened in second with $42.5 million, making it a bit of a comeback for Adam Sandler after both That’s My Boy and Jack and Jill underperformed. Poor reviews clearly did not discourage Sandler’s fans. Meanwhile, debuting at #3, Pacific Rim did not bomb but it also did not attract many mainstream moviegoers, ultimately proving that most of the hype was confined to the internet. The Heat and The Lone Ranger rounded out the top 5 with the latter dropping a disastrous 62%.

1. Despicable Me 2 — $44.8M
2. Grown Ups 2 — $42.5M
3. Pacific Rim — $38.3M
4. The Heat — $14M
5. The Lone Ranger — $11.1M
6. Monsters University — $10.6M
7. World War Z — $9.43M
8. White House Down — $6.15M
9. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain — $5M
10. Man of Steel — $4.83M

Pacific Rim could still be a little bit better than a total flop, since most non US markets (Japan and EU) are not playing the movie, but overall a sad day for the creative Blockbuster. Hope del Torro will still got a chance to do Hellboy 3

big mistake not to release it first internationally. All original films should be released first internationally and then in the US..

I don’t know how sad this is. I saw the movie, it was OK. I also saw despicable me 2, and I feel it was the better movie. The better movie won the weekend. That is the way it SHOULD be. What I don’t understand is why people love this but hated the first transformers (I agree the sequels were terrible), I think the first transformers is a wildly superior movie to Pacific Rim. The acting was a frankly a disaster, and I agree with Frank, that female lead was terrible and every scene she is in drags to a halt. I felt like this movie was only for Video game white guys who love asian girls.
