Scott Cooper’s directorial debut Crazy Heart was a great showcase for Jeff Bridges, earning him his first ever Oscar, but it was also one of those awards season films that seems to fade from memory after a few years. Now he is back with his follow-up film, Out of the Furnace, and it looks like it will also feature some great performances but with a bit more meat to the story as well. The movie stars Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard and Forest Whitaker. With a cast like that, how can you go wrong?

Bale plays Russell Baze, a steel mill worker who takes care of his terminally ill father in the evenings. When his brother Rodney (Affleck) returns home from Iraq, he gets caught up in a crime ring and soon disappears. Local law enforcement fails to turn up any leads so Russell has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. Let’s just say it looks like The Machinist meets Winter’s Bone meets… Fight Club?
