Monday Morning Box Office Report: Despicable Me Dominates, The Lone Ranger Misses the Mark

It was a solid July 4th weekend at the box office, thanks in large part to the huge success of Despicable Me 2, which pulled in $82.5 million ($142 million over five days). That is one of the best debuts ever for an animated film and a huge improvement over the previous film, which made $56.4 million back in 2010. Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, on the other hand, failed to put up Pirates of the Caribbean-type numbers, earning just under $50 million over a five day period. It’s definitely a disappointment, although the international box office will ultimately determine whether or not it is a total write-off for Disney. The Heat simmered down to third place in its second weekend with another $25 million, while Monsters University and World War Z rounded out the top 5. Perhaps the biggest surprise was Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, which debuted at #8 with $10 million and is already the fifth highest-grossing stand-up comedy movie of all-time!
