I didn’t rewatch Independence Day (and haven’t watched it in 10 or so years) while listening to the latest premium and it was still a great listen. I have zero urge to ever revisit Independence Day.

Ditto. Funny enough, after listening to the audio commentary; low and behold, ID4 pops up on TV5 (French Canadian channel) in French dubbing. Now that would’ve been an entertaining version to make a commentary for.

Only 20 minuets into the episode and Jay & Frank are fighting like Cats & Dogs!!!!!!!!!! This is why i love the Film Junk Podcast!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I see how going back and forth like that can confuse someone. BTW, I also agree with Frank on the issue of story and plot being closely related to the point they are almost interchangeable. I know, plot = all the specific series of events that make up the story… but I’m with Frank on the idea that they are almost interchangeable. Story and theme however, not so much.

First off, it’s important to note that the plot versus story conversation here is specifically in relation to cinema. The inclusion of visuals, audio, camera technique, etc. adds a whole other layer of storytelling that isn’t necessarily relevant when breaking the two terms down in literary terms.

Setting aside the technical aspect (and the idea of cinematic storytelling), I think a big difference between plot and story is the way in which plot can actually get in the way of a good story. People always complain about films that lay everything out on the table and leave little to the viewer’s imagination. This is classic over-plotting commonly found in blockbusters. The viewer is fed all of the details and left with little to the imagination, resulting in plot heavy, uninspired storytelling. Whereas pulling back plot points and allowing the story to breath can result in a stronger story when a viewer is given just enough information to come to their own conclusions. It’s a much more satisfying story when you’re not being fed all of the details via plot.

The typical “Scooby Doo” ending in which the twist is laid out for the audience is a good example of over-plotting. A film that’s confident enough to allow an audience to put two and two together without depending on plot ultimately results in a better story.

Plot is restricted to the information relayed throughout the film whereas story can be discovered or expanded upon by the audience based on information given to them by the plot. It’s a subtle difference but I think it’s an important one when attempting to craft something that’s engaging and entertaining.

I personally hate it when the arguing goes on. But if Frank wasn’t so easily impressed….

I’ve seen bits and pieces of it through my Dad over the years but not enough to say I’ve actually seen it. It’s one of a few outstanding Lester films — and probably the most significant — that I’ve been meaning to finally watch. A blu ray was released a couple of weeks ago but I’ve had no luck finding it anywhere.

I found my copy in the music section of Target as well.

Jay Have you checked out The Bed Sitting Room? The Knack..And how to get it? But Juggernaut is still THE under rated Lester film. Don’t Remake It! Just bloody release it on BD

Best part of this episode was the way Switzerland totally bombed Frankistan and then pretended to be neutral while a war was begun with the Cheel Republic.

Thought my email of a few weeks had fallen on deaf ears, but thanks Jay for the inclusion of ratings for stuff you’ve watched..Even thou I abide the rating system, I guess its the quick way to sift through the mire. Thanks Mr Cheel.

This was by far one of my favourite discussions on the podcast of late. It’s always a curly circle to try and perfectly define story vs plot vs theme vs premise. Think the most interesting point was around what a good ‘story teller’ can do with regards to movies. Although there’s little worse than a great story being butchered by a bad story teller.
Trying to define what makes a great story could fill an entire podcast on its own – perhaps it is all in the telling when it comes to movies?

Reminder: there was still one person on the podcast who did not like The Lone Ranger and After Earth more than Man of Steel.

Hey Sean, you were wondering why the New Zealand movie ‘Boy’ took so long to come out in north America. Basically lack of movie but the director took to kickstarter to raise the funds and, although it took a while, he finally got there, hence the delayed release. Its hard to recommend this one to non-kiwi’s. As a local film that touched on what’s an important subject here, it couldn’t be done better but I don’t know if that translates to a global audience…Jay, if you ever finish watching it, let us know. But watch Out of Blue first!
