The July 4th weekend showdown between Despicable Me 2 and The Lone Ranger is shaping up to be pretty one-sided as the former has already earned close to $60 million while the latter is just scraping by with $20 mil. Granted, the success of Despicable Me 2 should come as no surprise since the original Steve Carell animated flick earned $543 million worldwide. Also in semi-wide release is the stand up comedy tour film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain with quite a few options in select theatres as well including indie dramedy The Way, Way Back (also starring Steve Carell), Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love starring Steve Coogan, and the documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. What will you be watching this weekend?

  • I’ll be watching Despicable Me 2, and probably Lone Ranger as well, despite what I’m hearing… but damn, that run time! DM2 and The Heat have been consistently selling out every day this week.

  • Stinker

Seems like the The Lone Ranger will be the John Carter of Johnny Depp, and that should turn Disney into a “Marvel Movie” only studio. This and Pixar. Hope this has no influence on the upcoming Star Wars whatever.

  • Alice Cooper came to see The Lone Ranger the other day, that was cool.
