Weekly Poll Results: Best Movie of 2013 So Far

pollresultsbest2013sofar

Well, the votes are in and the results of last week’s poll may surprise you. According to Film Junk readers, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is the best movie of 2013 thus far! Considering all of the grumbling we’ve been hearing about the film, I certainly didn’t expect it to come out on top, but I suppose it just helps that so many people have seen it. Coming in at #2 is Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, which is also a bit of a surprise for the opposite reason. Star Trek Into Darkness predictably placed third (it is, after all, the highest rated blockbuster of the summer according to Rotten Tomatoes), followed by The Place Beyond the Pines and a two-way tie between Before Midnight and Iron Man 3. Pixar’s Monsters University pulled up the rear along with Sarah Polley’s autobiographical documentary Stories We Tell. Do you agree with these results?

1. Man of Steel — 16%
2. Spring Breakers — 14%
3. Star Trek Into Darkness — 13%
4. The Place Beyond the Pines — 9%
5. Before Midnight — 7%
5. Iron Man 3 — 7%
7. Stoker — 6%
8. Upstream Color — 6%
9. Mud — 5%
10. Side Effects — 4%
10. This is the End — 4%
12. Behind the Candelabra — 3%
13. Fast & Furious 6 — 2%
14. Frances Ha — 1%
14. Evil Dead — 1%
16. Monsters University — 1%
17. Stories We Tell – 0%

Sad to see Mud so low. I’ve enjoyed movies like Side Effects, Stoker, Man of Steel, Place Beyond the Pines and Spring Breakers this year, but I feel Mud so far is the clear favorite.

In my area (and I’m sure many areas without a multiplex or easy access to lesser-known indie movies), movies like Mud are usually late runs or don’t come out at all. Fortunately, I’ll be able to check it out for a one-night screening in the next week or so. Been looking forward to it.

My top 10 of the year so far…..

    1. Spring Breakers
    2. Place Beyond the Pines
    3. Mud
    4. Behind the Candelabra
    5. Star Trek Into Darkness
    6. To the Wonder
    7. White House Down
    8. Pain and Gain
    9. This is the End
    10. The Great Gatsby

  • Corey Pierce

If I were to make a top 10 from that list alone it would be

    1. Stories We Tell
    2. Before Midnight
    3. Stoker
    4. Frances Ha
    5. Behind the Candleabra
    6. Iron Man 3
    7. Mud
    8. Side Effects
    9. Monsters University
    10. Star Trek Into Darkness

Haven’t seen Pines, Evil Dead or Fast 6. Upstream Color and Spring Breakers are overrated and/or crap.

If I were to include anything else not on this list released here in 2013, it would easily be the Gael Garcia Bernal vehicle “No” and surprisingly Pain and Gain maybe just outside the top 10

man of steel, star trek, and iron man 3 in the top 5? fucking fanboys…

i dont get the love for spring breakers. i gave it a look-see after the filmjunk jizzfest, and found it thoroughly mediocre. it had a moment here and there, but really, this film just loved to turn around far too often and relish the stank of it’s own fumes.

Really? No love for World War ZI’m bias because I’m a fan of the book. But I think few could disagree that based on scale alone World War Z is the biggest most fully realized zombie feature. And I thought the only redeeming quality of the self-indulgent Spring Breakers was bikini clad hot Disney chicks, especially nekked Vanessa Hudgens. And the ATL twins. I find Harmony Korine similar to David Lynch. Interesting visuals but fuck all for plot. I mean can someone explain the point to the movie besides Harmony wanting to full-fill his Spring Break fantasy. Unless the point was that spring break has no point.

Turns out us readers are pretty stupid.

  • Bob Rose

Danny Boyle’s TRANCE is my favorite film I’ve seen in theaters so far this year.

  • George Taylor

Man of Steel on nr1? It was easily the worst film of the year. La Menthes predictions were right, and I am one those who sure has some apologizing to do.

  • john anthony

before midnight, place beyond the pines are standouts for me. frances ha and trance were good. stoker was disappointing. i still need to see mud and stories we tell.

most anticipated for the rest of the year:

only god forgives _nicolas winding refn

    nebraska _alexander payne

    venus in fur _roman polanski

only loves left alive _jim jarmusch

    inside llewyn davis _coens

the immigrant _james gray (starring marion cotillard)

  • Ripplesdip

Well the top 3 (at this point) are a surprise. But then again I find even the better films of this year to be mediocre. Roll on Autumn, and maybe we’ll get something worth talking about.

  • Joachim Lothe-Rikenberg

I would put most of the ones that came in at the bottom much higher.

The real question is what are Sean, Jay, and Frank’s favorite films of the year??? They should do a Top 5 of the year so far in a upcoming episode!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kenneth Serenyi

Most of my most anticipated movies of this year have been really disappointing. I enjoyed Oblivion, and IM3 because it was a different kind of superhero movie. Nothing else has really been all that exciting. I think MOS was the most disappointing for me so far – I really wanted to like that movie.
