Tuesday Morning Box Office Report: Monsters University Repeats, White House Down Feels The Heat

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

Pixar stayed at the head of the class for the second weekend in a row as Monsters University defeated all newcomers, taking in another $45 million at the box office. The movie is just about to cross $300 million worldwide but will face stiff competition this coming weekend from Despicable Me 2. In second place, The Heat also opened strong, building on the success of Bridesmaids with a $39 million debut. That’s a better start than Identity Thief had earlier this year and it’s about on par with The Hangover: Part III, which is extremely impressive. It’s also Sandra Bullock’s best opening weekend ever. Elsewhere, World War Z fell to #3, while Roland Emmerich’s White House Down struggled out of the gate, earning just $24.9 million. It’s Roland Emmerich’s lowest wide release opening weekend since The Patriot, and it’s less than the similarly-themed Olympus Has Fallen made with half the budget back in March. Man of Steel rounded out the top 5, having recently passed $500 million worldwide.
