    Here are the 2 major problems I had with World War Z: the camera was too close to the action/sporadic in movement and the CG zombies looked pretty bad. Everyone craps on the I Am Legend’s zombies– these were FAR less threatening. To be fair they were wise enough to only show them in very quick shots. Unfortunately, these shots are so quick that they ended up showing everything in the trailer. That’s why my favorite part of the movie was the third act, because we have zombies in makeup as opposed to the fake CG. Makes for some actual suspense.

    Amazing episode this week, guys. The best in awhile! The last 30 minutes (pre spoiler discussion) were probably the best Film Junk of 2013 so far.

    I think they picked up Israel because that was in the original script , when it was closer to the book. I mean, in the book , Israel is the country that standed the best in the wolrd and the zombies didn’t crossed the wall.

    Regarding World War Z:

    As an Israeli it was certainly entertaining to see Jerusalem overrun by Hollywood zombies (it was actually filmed in Malta, apparently). It’s certainly the most impressive and epic action set-piece in the film, but for me it was funny how Israel was basically reduced to “Jerusalem”. Am I to assume Tel Aviv is overrun by zombies because it doesn’t have a wall? Is this a political statement?

    I also felt the filmmakers were like, “if we don’t put Hasidic Jews alongside Arabs nobody will know it’s Israel”. Maybe they’re right.

    And Brad Pitt’s Israeli companion in the film is named Segen. Segen means “Lieutenant”. So I have to assume she’s presenting herself to him by her rank, but she doesn’t actually mention that to him, which I found a little odd.

    As for the non-Israel stuff, the sequence in the lab was very tense and well-made, but the movie was hampered by a downbeat, run-of-the-mill apocalyptic/hopeful ending, which is a cliche at this point. The Russia storyline sounds more interesting as a non-closure.
    All in all it’s a pretty good movie, reshoots and all.

    Another podcast I listen to, Now Playing, likened the PG-13 violence in “World War Z” to “Hunger Games”, where you knew there had to be some horrible shit going on, but rather than hide it in an effective or clever manner, they’d just shake the shit out of the camera or otherwise obscure the view in a way that was more obnoxious or jarring than anything. As I think you guys mentioned, there’s still ways you can get brutal violence across in a PG-13 flick, and I enjoy it and don’t take the rating into consideration when it’s done well.

    No way. Kung Fu Panda 2 is atrocious. It’s not even close to the first movie. It’s about as “good” as Cars.

    Really enjoyed the episode. I agree with everyone as I was pleasantly surprised by World War Z. I thought the Hoard Zombies were an interesting take on the zombie genre. I have seen so many Zombie movies, I like how they did something a little bit more different and interesting.

    Makes sense – Jerusalem was home to historys first official zombie. Jesus came back from the dead but I believe he was more of a traditional shuffling kind…maybe it was the sandals.
