Bioshock Creator Ken Levine to Write Logan’s Run Remake

Logan's Run

As the video game and movie industries continue to converge, we are seeing plenty of talent from both sides crossing over to try something new. Movie directors and screenwriters have been playing in the interactive sandbox for years now, but lately Hollywood is starting to take notice of some of the game industry’s biggest auteurs as well. After a couple of failed attempts at getting a Logan’s Run remake off the ground, Warner Brothers has been desperate for someone to take another stab at updating the 1976 sci-fi flick for a new generation. This week they have decided to hand off the long-gestating project to one of the most recognizable names in gaming: Ken Levine, creator of the Bioshock series and co-founder of Irrational Games. An interesting choice to be sure, but will his knack for writing games translate to the big screen?

According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has hired Ken Levine to write the screenplay for their Logan’s Run remake under the supervision of producer Jon Berg (All You Need is Kill, Elf). They claim that this is a passion project for Levine, which is the main reason he decided to take it on. The project has been in development for years now with Nicolas Winding Refn was once attached to direct and Ryan Gosling signed on to star. Before that Bryan Singer was also attached to direct and Alex Garland wrote a draft of the screenplay. Now they are essentially starting from scratch.

The story takes place in a future society where humans are no longer required to work but their lives are to be terminated at the age of 30. Those who challenge the law are hunted by Sandmen and killed. Levine obviously has plenty of experience with dystopian futures, but he also has written at least one screenplay before. He once revealed on a podcast that he was hired to write a romantic comedy for singer-songwriter Amy Grant. (Fortunately it never got made.) Are you still interested in a Logan’s Run remake? Does Ken Levine’s involvement make you more or less excited?

As a fan of both Logan’s Run and Bioshock I have to say that I’m extremely OK with this.

Me, too! Fingers and toes crossed for a successful flick.

  • Logan 5

I’m excited about this, but I hope Ken draws more inspiration from the original movie than the novel. Logan’s Run is one of those rare instances where I think the movie was better than the book.
