My childhood days were spent watching Ninja films. For me it was the coolest thing ever and they fired my imagination. Obviously, as an older film buff they don't pass muster and their only cinematic importance is in representing a bizarre pre-occupation in the early days of 80's b-movies.

The original Ninja trilogy from Canon ran from 1980-1983 and included Enter the Dragon, Revenge of the Ninja and probably the most insane Ninja film ever made, Ninja III: The Domination, reviewed quite accurately on the show. As far as I know this is the only ninja film in existence that has a distinctly supernatural storyline. It's also quite violent and brutal so who knows what damage it did to my young brain. Nobody cared about those things back then. You had to fend for yourself.

Then Canon came back in 1985 with American Ninja (also directed by Firstenberg) which was a huge hit and spawned four sequels, the last one made in 1993 (I haven't seen all of them). I still remember being blown away, though, by the somewhat epic American Ninja II with its island fortress of red and black ninjas. This was definitely the most ninjas ever seen in one movie. Like, ever.

Then there's the non-Canon Chuck Norris ninja film, The Octagon, which I remember fondly, as I remember most bad movies from my childhood which I haven't re-watched.

It's nice to see this stuff come out on Blu-Ray.

It all sounds good on paper but it falls apart when you actually sit down and try to re-watch those problematic films. It was very hard for me to watch Superman-4 and.. as a programmer it was twice as painful to rewatch Superman-3..

My vote is for you guys reviewing more horror and documentaries for the main review. I've always thought that you've had some of your best discussions on those two genres. Also, unless its a very high concept comedy movie I find your comedy reviews to be kind of lackluster and resulting in repeating the best jokes.

Jay, not sure if you watch the Colbert Report or not but he interviewed Alex Gibney a few weeks back and it was interesting to hear that Julian Assange would only agree to be interviewed for the movie if he got paid for it. Alex refused (I'm guessing this is a point of integrity for doco makers?) and so Julian then offered to be interviewed for free if Alex spied on the other people in the doco for him. Whatever your opinions of the legitimacy of Wikileaks there's no denying that Assange is eccentric at best, disturbed at worst.

I'm really itching for an Alien premium, because it hits the sweet spot in terms of quality ratio: you've got two great films, one good but troubled film, and one piece of garbage to tear apart (Alien Ressurection).
