Although it will now be hitting theatres next spring instead of this summer, Warner Brothers is not about to miss out on a prime marketing opportunity for their upcoming 300 prequel, 300: Rise of an Empire. The first trailer for the film has been revealed just in time to screen with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel this weekend. Snyder is not directing this movie, of course, but he did produce it and also co-wrote the screenplay based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel Xerxes. But will his absence behind the camera even be noticeable?
Lena Headey reprises her role as Queen Gorgo of Sparta, and the trailer makes sure to highlight that fact because, hey, any connection to Game of Thrones can’t hurt. However, the story mostly revolves around King Xerxes of Persia (played again by Rodrigo Santoro) and Artemisia I of Caria (Eva Green). It seems to lack the simple yet effective hook of the original film, but perhaps all the speed ramping and desaturated colours will be enough to keep fans satisfied. 300: Rise of an Empire is scheduled to hit theatres on March 7, 2014; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
