Choose Your Own Adventure Movie Lands at Fox

If, like me, you grew up on Choose Your Own Adventure books back in the ’80s, you may be interested to know that the series is enjoying a bit of a comeback as of late. After being relaunched in the mid-2000s by one of the original authors, R. A. Montgomery, his company Chooseco has also been putting out digital e-book versions of some of these classic adventures along with an interactive movie based on one of the very first books, The Abominable Snowman. Now the Choose Your Own Adventure brand is apparently heading to the big screen as well. This week it was announced that 20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to the popular book series. But will the movie contain an interactive component similar to the books? And if not… what’s the point?

According to THR, John Davis (Predators, Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and John Fox will produce a Choose Your Own Adventure movie for 20th Century Fox. R.A. Montgomery and his wife Shannon Gilligan are also on board as executive producers. It is said to be seven-figure deal and they are developing it as a “crossplatform four-quadrant action-adventure franchise.” While I’m not sure exactly what that means, they obviously have pretty high hopes for it.

At the moment it is unclear if the movie will draw from any specific CYOA books or if it will just be a completely original story. There is also no mention of maintaining a multi-path narrative. Perhaps they could do something like Jonathan Lynn’s Clue, with different theatres showing one of a few possible endings. If they wanted to be really ambitious, they could come up with in-theatre devices to handle the choice, not unlike Bob Gale’s failed experiment Mr. Payback. Do you have any interest in a Choose Your Own Adventure movie?

Fuck Choose Your Own Adventure its not good, but Sword & Sorcery now thats some literature.

I think the concept of a CYOA film is good, but not a name brand one. CYOA books are short, shallow, and bland, and I don’t want a film like that. But I’ve recently gotten into japanese visual novels which are have branching stories and it’s a really great format for intelligently written stories.

I’ve had an idea for a choose your own adventure movie for some time. It would be best on DVD or Blue Ray, and at points, you could use the remote to choose a path. Film six hours worth of movie, and let there be a few middles, and several endings. I think it could work well on an at-home platform.

You would probably want a default path, for those that just want to turn it on for the kids, without leaving them the remote to fuck things up.
