Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fast & Furious Still Strong, After Earth Crashes and Burns

It was another Fast & Furious weekend as Vin Diesel and his crew cruised to their second straight box office victory, outmaneuvering all newcomers. The movie still suffered a severe 65% drop from its opening weekend, but fortunately for Universal, the other new releases could not catch it. Magician heist flick Now You See Me actually did better than expected, slipping past M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth to take second place, which was clearly a bad sign for After Earth. The Will Smith / Jaden Smith vehicle had to settle for third, earning just $27 million on a $130 million budget. That puts it in the same ballpack as their previous team-up The Pursuit of Happyness but nowhere near Smith’s usual blockbuster fare. It’s pretty safe to say this is the first major bomb of the summer. Star Trek Into Darkness and Epic rounded out the top 5, but the biggest surprise of the weekend had to be the Bollywood flick Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which came out of nowhere to claim the ninth spot at the box office. Pretty impressive for a foreign film, especially in the middle of the summer movie season.
