Blade Runner Sequel Gets Green Lantern Writer

It’s been a while since we’ve had any major updates on the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, which Ridley Scott signed on to produce and direct back in 2011. I’m sure many fans are still finding it hard to believe that this is actually happening, but since Ridley Scott was already willing to revisit the Alien series, it no longer seems quite so quite crazy. The big question is: where will they go with the story and will it involve Rick Deckard? We heard some conflicting reports about this last year and at the moment we still don’t have a definitive answer. However, what we do know is that someone else has come on board to help Ridley Scott shape the story, and that person is one of the writers of the 2011 bomb Green Lantern. But hey, let’s not jump to conclusions, people!

According to The Wrap, Michael Green is currently in negotiations to write the Blade Runner sequel for Warner Brothers, Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions. Green was indeed one of four credited writers on Green Lantern, and he also co-wrote the screenplay for The Flash movie. His other writing credits are mostly from TV, having worked on such shows as Smallville, Everwood, Heroes, and more recently Oren Peli’s The River.

Obviously the initial reaction is that Green sounds like the wrong guy to take on more cerebral sci-fi material, but what else is new? I’m just wondering what happened to original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher since it was announced last year that he was going to reteam with Scott on the sequel. Perhaps he was simply hired to come up with the story and now Michael Green is formalizing everything into a screenplay. Either way, the article also states that Ridley Scott is still “courting Harrison Ford to reprise his role as Rick Deckard” so perhaps the rumours of a female protagonist were not entirely true. Do you have high hopes for a Blade Runner sequel?

uuugghhh…Green Lantern was a dud in so many ways..i.e., Ryan Renolds, Blake Lively, the screenplay and story…hope this works out.

I guess its better than Lindeholf, orci and kurtzman.

Cool story bro. I’m game. I don’t have much confidence in that Green guy though. I hope it doesn’t involve Deckard. Is Vangelis still alive btw? I’ll do a quick check.

Jon Spaihts wrote the Bekmambetov-produced The Darkest Hour before co-writing Prometheus which turned out great, imo. So Green can have a similar transition with the BR sequel. Or maybe he’ll just write a draft and they’ll kindly show him the way out :). It’s up to him to deliver.

It’s easy to judge screenwriters by their movies, but the actual script this guy turned in for GREEN LANTERN could be completely different from what is onscreen. And that screenplay probably suffered from a million stupid studio notes.

By the by, I’m Scott, Scott-El, the awesome guy with http://www.ReconditePictures.com!

  • Has there been any consideration of using the sequel book, I wonder? There was a part 2 that was more a sequel to the movie than the book it was based on, so they could have used ideas from that.

By the by, I’m Scott, Scott Hall, “the bad guy” with the World Wrestling Federation… Seriously though, Green Latern writer better have been using that script just for crack money when he wrote it, that movie was terrible. Hopefully, he is actually a great writer but, his script was just decimated after he handed in.

They can just get Daft Punk to do it R.A.M is basically a funky Vangelis album.

It’s also good to keep in mind that this guy had to come in and pitch his take to the people making the movie and he probably sent over a writing sample that was not produced and put on his IMDB page. Landing a gig like this is very competitive. He has a vision or a voice that was more appealing to the producers than everyone else in town.

Well, that GL movie had all the WB moneymen and all the DC Comics guys and a million other people interfering to try to make sure it appealed to the broadest audience and was the next SPIDER-MAN. How could it not be BS? On a related note, I flagged my second comment because it does sound narcissistic. I just wanted you guys to know it’s me.

  • Jesus H Christ this is a bad idea. I mean look what happened with Prometheus – it’s shit. I can only see the same happening to Blade Runner. Ridley – you have run out of talent. Go away.

As long as he was involved in writing screen play for ‘The Flash’ I’m sold on the matter!
