Blade Runner Sequel Gets Green Lantern Writer

It’s been a while since we’ve had any major updates on the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, which Ridley Scott signed on to produce and direct back in 2011. I’m sure many fans are still finding it hard to believe that this is actually happening, but since Ridley Scott was already willing to revisit the Alien series, it no longer seems quite so quite crazy. The big question is: where will they go with the story and will it involve Rick Deckard? We heard some conflicting reports about this last year and at the moment we still don’t have a definitive answer. However, what we do know is that someone else has come on board to help Ridley Scott shape the story, and that person is one of the writers of the 2011 bomb Green Lantern. But hey, let’s not jump to conclusions, people!
According to The Wrap, Michael Green is currently in negotiations to write the Blade Runner sequel for Warner Brothers, Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions. Green was indeed one of four credited writers on Green Lantern, and he also co-wrote the screenplay for The Flash movie. His other writing credits are mostly from TV, having worked on such shows as Smallville, Everwood, Heroes, and more recently Oren Peli’s The River.
Obviously the initial reaction is that Green sounds like the wrong guy to take on more cerebral sci-fi material, but what else is new? I’m just wondering what happened to original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher since it was announced last year that he was going to reteam with Scott on the sequel. Perhaps he was simply hired to come up with the story and now Michael Green is formalizing everything into a screenplay. Either way, the article also states that Ridley Scott is still “courting Harrison Ford to reprise his role as Rick Deckard” so perhaps the rumours of a female protagonist were not entirely true. Do you have high hopes for a Blade Runner sequel?
