Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fast & Furious 6 Tears Up Record-Breaking Memorial Day Weekend

Although some had predicted that the stiff competition at multiplexes this weekend might force the new releases to cannibalize each other, it actually ended up improving the overall bottom line. It was the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend ever with the top 6 making a combined $323M over four days. Fast & Furious 6 led the way with $122 million and $275 million worldwide, which is the biggest start ever for the series. Clearly the franchise is still gaining new fans. On the other hand, The Hangover Part III came in at #2 with $51 million which is huge for a comedy but a major drop from the last film. Star Trek Into Darkness managed a strong second weekend at #3 with $48 million, followed closely by Epic which fell within expectations for the first installment in a new CG-animated franchise. Iron Man 3 rounded out the top 5. Based on these numbers, I’d say there’s a good chance both After Earth and Now You See Me could get completely ignored next weekend.

1. Fast & Furious 6 — $122M
2. The Hangover Part III — $51M
3. Star Trek Into Darkness — $48M
4. Epic — $44M
5. Iron Man 3 — $24.6M
6. The Great Gatsby — $17.2M
7. Mud — $2.5M
8. The Croods — $1.61M
9. 42 — $1.6M
10. Oblivion — $1.05M

I knew Fast Six would make money but I truly didn’t expect it to be this huge!
It was sold out all matinee and night showings at a few theatres near me. The constant phrase after learning all the shows were sold out was, “Wanna see hangover instead?”

Damn never thought the F&F series would ever be this big!

Saw the first one and it was just terrible and I like Vin too! Paul walker has the charisma of a piece of wood and the stories were just silly…but people love them enough to support them.

#2 I know this is stating the obvious, but people don’t see F&F films for the acting or the stories, they see them for the car chases & crashes. Kinda like why NASCAR is popular.

As Sean said, After Earth may get ignored when it opens. I was kind if interested in it until I saw a full trailer. Looks like the whole movie is just Will Smith’s kid running from baboons while Will sits back in the spaceship, chatting with him on the radio.

The Fast And The Furious films aren’t made to be award winning films…. They’re just fun, macho action flicks, like the old actions movies Arnold & Sly used to do, back in the 80’s and early 90’s (The Running Man, Rambo, True Lies,Tango & Cash, Commando). When you see these types of films, you’re not supposed to go looking at how well the actors can act or what is or isn’t humanly possible. If you want realism, watch Cops, or the Discovery channel. The F&F films are doing well, because they’re entertaining, and have fun characters that people get attached to. I wouldn’t go so far as to consider The first Fast And The furious as a terrible film, but more of a reimagining of the early 90’s film Point Break. But the franchise has become more than that now. The series just seems to be getting more peoples attention now than ever before. Paul Walker is no Paul Newman…..but he’s not that bad of an actor. The film,Running Scared proves that much at least.
