Quicksilver to Appear in Both X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Avengers 2

Last month Joss Whedon started dropping hints about a couple of new characters that would be appearing in The Avengers 2. He referred to them as “a brother-sister act” and called them two of his favourite characters from the comic. Fans quickly deduced that he was probably referring to Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, the son and daughter of Magneto, which Whedon recently confirmed in an interview with IGN. Here’s where it gets interesting. Before these characters will get a chance to appear in The Avengers 2 in 2015, it would seem that at least one of them will be popping up in another film: Bryan Singer recently announced that Quicksilver will also be in X-Men: Days of Future Past. But how can two different studios have permission to use the same comic book character?
This week Bryan Singer announced via Twitter that Evan Peters (Kick-Ass 2, American Horror Story) had joined the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past:
Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

Since Quicksilver has appeared in many X-Men comics, Fox is well within their rights to use the character (along with the Scarlet Witch, if they wanted). However, Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed that they can also be used in Marvel movies as long as they do not “discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage.” Strange. It makes you wonder how many other similar loopholes might exist for other X-Men characters.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumours about potential crossovers between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Marvel superhero franchises set up at other studios. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that there will actually be a crossover here as Marvel will likely cast a different actor as Quicksilver and will be required to approach the character from a different perspective. While it might be cool to see two different takes on the same character, I suspect that some comic book fans will frown on this lack of continuity.
Are you excited to see Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch in The Avengers 2? Is Quicksilver an interesting addition to X-Men: Days of Future Past or is Bryan Singer just trying to steal Joss Whedon’s thunder?
