Medieval Times Movie in the Works

Following up on last week’s announcement about a new Dungeons & Dragons movie (which is now being challenged by Hasbro with a potential lawsuit), here is something even more ridiculous that fantasy fans can look forward to. The long-running restaurant chain Medieval Times is apparently in the process of adapting itself for the big screen. This is, of course, a family dinner venue where guests are treated to a jousting competition and rousing theatre performance while they eat like slobs and get served by wenches. Sure, we’ve seen theme park attractions like The Pirates of the Caribbean turned into successful movie franchises, but unfortunately this does not have the power of Disney behind it. On the bright side, it could spark a new trend of movies based on restaurants. Here’s to hoping Applebee’s: The Movie isn’t far off.

According to Deadline, production companies Benderspink and Broken Road will team up to turn Medieval Times into a feature film property and shop it around to studios. Benderspink recently did the Steve Carell comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the 2011 Arthur remake while Broken Road has been involved in several Happy Madison productions including Here Comes the Boom, Jack and Jill and Zookeeper. No writer or director has been attached as of yet.

Medieval Times is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year and was previously featured in such films as The Cable Guy and Garden State. The closest Hollywood has come to a true Medieval Times movie, however, is A Knight’s Tale starring the late Heath Ledger. Personally, I think they should just recruit the best actors from the various Medieval Times locations and rehash the same corny story that they perform every night, complete with audience participation. Are you game for a Medieval Times movie?

Didn’t this already happen? I thought Cable Guy was the Medieval Times movie…
