Smith is like cancer, you dodge a bullet (Django Unchained) and then it returns again. Obviously new Hollywood doesn’t understand the original film at all. If they did, they would cast it with older, grittier actors (think Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Keitel, De Niro, Kurt Russell).
A contemporary story that more closely parallels Peckinpah’s classic would have a gang of low level drug dealers on the run flee to Mexico under the protection of a cartel who they double cross. What is this disgraced DEA agent bullshit? If Smith is afraid of controversy or upsetting his image my guess is this is going to be a story with some heavy-handed moral message. The original characters were amoral, unlikeable scum.
This has cinematic turd written all over it.

Never mind Django Unchained; it’s difficult seeing this being one-tenth as audacious as the original Wild Bunch.

And I can’t see how “a disgraced D.E.A. agent who assembles a team to go after a Mexican drug lord and his fortune,” is a modern take on The Wild Bunch. There’s nothing in that plot description that matches up with the original.

Surrounding cast is key – please no Travolta, Ribisi, or Sasha Cohen. No women either. A Scientology-free sausage fest, sign me up…
