Just a few days after ABC officially announced that they had given a series order to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a first-look teaser trailer for the TV show has been released online. The story will take place in the Avengers universe but is not expected to have appearances from any of the big name superheroes (although the Hulk and Iron Man were briefly seen in some viral videos). This seems more like a Men in Black-type show about secret agents tasked with “protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.”

Clark Gregg returns as Agent Coulson (the rumoured explanation for this is pretty lame if you ask me) but aside from him there isn’t much to directly associate this with The Avengers. The rest of the cast is mostly unknowns. Joss Whedon is involved in some capacity and obviously has a lot of experience shepherding interesting TV shows, so I suppose it has that going for it. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is expected to premiere on ABC in September; check out the promo after the jump and see what you think.

  • Well, that didn’t show you much.

I’ll tune in, but it’ll be up to the show to keep me coming back week after week.

  • wow, that release for Coulson’s return is really, really bad and unnecessary. It seems the natural thing is also the best thing for budget concerns – have the series be set before the movie. In this way any interaction with future Avengers can be one-on-one to help control budgets.

  • so stupid, you could even have Coulson be seen with his ‘player cards’ to add a nice melancholy feel to the show…some would say that is ‘beating a dead horse’ but it could be shorthand to explain his character making sacrificial choices as the show’s hero. #lostopportunity
