Monday Morning Box Office Report: Pain & Gain Owns Scrawny Weekend

Overall it was a pretty slow weekend at the North American box office as moviegoers mostly decided to save their money and wait for the summer season to kick off next week. Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain flexed its muscles and topped the box office with a $20 million debut, his lowest opening weekend since The Island in 2005. Still, it was good enough to knock Oblivion down to #2, dropping 53% from last weekend. 42 dropped to third place while The Big Wedding bombed, earning just $7.5 million. The Croods rounded out the top 5. Overseas, Iron Man 3 was off to a great start with $195.3 million, which is the ninth best international debut of all time. While it probably can’t hope to top The Avengers, there’s a very good chance the movie will outgross both of the previous Iron Man movies with ease.
