Ratchet & Clank Movie Coming in 2015

With all of the video game movies we’ve seen over the past decade or so, I have often wondered why more of them haven’t been animated. After all, this seems like the easiest way to be completely faithful to the source material and CG animated movies tend to be very successful at the box office. I suppose we did get Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, not to mention those Resident Evil CG-animated movies… hmm, maybe I just answered my own question. At any rate, this week Sony has announced plans to bring one of their biggest Playstation franchises to the big screen. That’s right, a Ratchet & Clank movie is currently in development and planned for release sometime in 2015.
According to the press release, Sony is teaming up with Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment to create the very first Ratchet & Clank feature film (which does not yet have an official title). Rainmaker Entertainment is the studio formerly known as Mainframe, who previously did animated shows like Reboot and Beast Wars back in the ’90s. They also worked on the recent animated film Escape from Planet Earth.
Insomniac Games are also overseeing the production and their senior writer T.J. Fixman penned the script. Jericca Cleland (cinematographer on Arthur Christmas) is directing. Although it sounds like this will be a theatrical release, it’s not quite clear just how big the release will be. I suppose the quality of the final product may ultimately determine that. I’m curious to see if more video game studios will follow suit… I’ve always said that a World of Warcraft animated movie would be fantastic. Are you interested in a Ratchet & Clank movie?
