Dodgeball Sequel in the Works

MCDDODG FE012

As we await news on the fate of Zoolander 2, it looks like another Ben Stiller comedy is about to get a sequel of its own. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story was a pretty solid hit for Fox back in 2004, grossing $114 million on a $20 million budget. The original featured Vince Vaughn as the owner of a local gym on the verge of being being bought out by a giant corporate fitness chain owned by Stiller. He assembles a ragtag team of misfits and enters a dodgeball tournament in the hopes of winning the prize money, ultimately facing off against Ben Stiller and his own team of ringers. Of course, what many people don’t realize is that the movie wasn’t actually written or directed by Ben Stiller. Instead, the whole thing was the brainchild of Rawson Marshall Thurber (The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) who doesn’t appear to be returning.

According to THR, Fox and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Productions have hired Clay Tarver to pen a Dodgeball sequel. Although he has recently written a handful of comedy scripts, his only work that has made it to the screen thus far is the truck driver thriller Joy Ride (which he co-wrote with J.J. Abrams). The plot of Dodgeball 2 supposedly finds “Vaughn and Stiller forced to team up to fight an even bigger threat.” No word yet on who might direct, but there may be a chance that Tarver could take the job himself.

Tarver was originally attached to make his directorial debut with a movie called Men Making Music, Music Making Men, a comedy about competitive barbershop quartets. That hasn’t come to fruition, but in the meantime he wrote Disney’s upcoming fictional remake of the documentary Quantum Hoops, about a Caltech basketball team full of genius types who are not so great at sports. It sounds like he’s got the right background for this project, but let’s hope for his sake it actually gets made. Are you game for a Dodgeball sequel?

I did enjoy the first one, haven’t seen it in a long time though. At least this might bring Christine Taylor onto the radar again.

Well, I did like it, could be ridiculous and funny. Could also be horrible.

Side note, just thought I’d mention one of the “Related Stories” underneath for me is “What’s Your Vagina Supposed to Smell Like?”

I wonder what they’ll do with a Lance Armstrong cameo…
