Justin Theroux Being Eyed for Doctor Strange Movie?

In just a few weeks, Iron Man 3 will kick off Phase Two of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sequence of films that will also include Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2. However, by now it has also become clear that Marvel likes to plan things out way ahead of time, which of course means that they’re already thinking about Phase Three as well. Earlier this year, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige confirmed to MTV that both Ant-Man and Dr. Strange would be a part of Phase Three, and now it seems that they may already have an actor in mind for the lead role in the latter. Rumour has it that actor / screenwriter Justin Theroux (Wanderlust) may soon be donning the red cloak of Dr. Stephen Strange.

The news comes courtesy of CHUD, who cite a trusted industry source as having given them the scoop. They also correctly point out that Theroux already has a working relationship with Marvel since he wrote the script for Iron Man 2. Could Theroux also be helping to write the Doctor Strange movie as well? Last we heard, the screenplay was being penned by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan the Barbarian, Sahara), but hey you never know.

Either way, Theroux does seem to look the part and he previously played a wizard in David Gordon Green’s Your Highness. What more could you ask for? There was also a recent rumour that Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) might be in talks to direct the Doctor Strange movie, but that was soon shot down by Alvarez himself. That doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t happening though. Do you think Justin Theroux is a good choice for Doctor Strange? Who would you like to see direct?

I like Theroux, but having a lesser-known actor is definitely not the way to go in a movie as hard to sell as Doctor Strange. As far as writing this script goes, he did a pretty lackluster job with Iron Man 2.

The Viggo Mortensen rumour was better. He’d be great.

A gnome could play this role and I would not care. Starting to agree with Jay on this casting stuff. Are the Dead Girl rights owned by Fox? She would be good in this.
