Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium Trailer Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster

elysium

Everyone likes to talk about how overly secretive J.J. Abrams is, but I think Neill Blomkamp has been doing a pretty good job of keeping his latest film Elysium under wraps as well. Up until now we hadn’t really seen anything from it aside from a few photos of Matt Damon with a shaved head carrying a futuristic weapon. Now that the first trailer has finally arrived online, I think fans of District 9 will be very pleased with what they see.

The story takes place in a future world where rich folks live on a man-made space station as the rest of humanity is left to rot on a decaying planet Earth. Matt Damon plays a desperate man pushed into action, merging his body with underground technology in order to infiltrate Elysium. Once again, the social commentary may or may not be particularly deep, but the realistic integration of CG is absolutely stunning. Elysium hits theatres on Aug. 9th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Bwaahm! Interesting trailer and Neill Blomkamp seems to have retained his inspiration from Iron Man as conveyed in District 9.

  • Derek McFarland

Loved District 9. Hope this is just as good.

  • James

    Looks very cool!

Where’s District 10? Christopher Johnson promised us he’d return in 3 years.

  • Kasper

I’ve got a massive hard on right now. Also the trailer was pretty good.

  • MLCGS

District 9 was awesome, and I am definitely looking forward to see what Blomkamp does with more money to work with. One of my most anticipated movies this year.

Maybe I’m becoming an old fart of late as most trailers don’t really get me pumped….but this? I just started dancing! The look of the two opposing life styles look fantastic, the cast is great and to top it all mr blomkamp will undoubtedly make an intelligent sci fi with the added bonus of exciting accessible blockbuster.

    See y’all at the movies;-)

  • kyri

agh.. why did they have to cast Judie Foster in it.

  • Maopheus

It’s nice to see that Blomkamp, with an increased budget, still has that eye to making everything seem very real and organic. Just like with D9, it’s very hard to tell what is CG and what is not, and isn’t that the point? Although I do have to say that it seems a little odd that Damon would be using some kind of modified AK-47. It’s 2154 and somehow AK-47’s have survived over 200 years? It’s either a testament to the longevity of the AK or maybe the prop guy just needed something to use.

I like how some of the tech used is both sleek and junk-made/put together. Blomkamp really does know what makes really good sci-fi when it comes to the technology used.

Watching this felt like I was watching a videogame cut-scene. Elysium reminded me of the Halo ring. ON BOARD the Elysium train ticket please!!!

We have Oblivion and then Elysium in the same summer. This is going to be great for sci-fi.

@Brian – also thought of Iron Man when I saw this.

  • ryanh

    Sci-fi is due a resurgence, I hope.

Think looks like a good place to start things.

  • anton

  • Tony D’Amico

That looked pretty fucking awesome, I’m definitely stoked for it.

@ Maopheus, AK-47 (or an upgraded version of it, which we still are seeing being produced, the latest one being the AK-107) isn’t the most used rifle in the world without a reason.

Richard Venola, an editor of Combat Arms, noted this about the gun: “If I had to go to an unknown planet and I was allowed to bring one firearm, it would be an AK-47….When western civilization breaks down, I want an Ak-47.”

It’s popular for being extremely cheap and reliable. You could drive over it with a tank, bury it in sand and mud, abuse it to a degree that it is covered in rust, and it will still work — whereas other guns don’t have this quality. It is also the simplest gun to clean, and is in addition, because of its simplicity, easy to train soldiers with. A soldier can be taught to take care, field-strip and clean a Kalashnikov in a few hours. The M-16 is going to take a week.

I personally believe it will be around for about 300 years after its first use in 1947, and I don’t believe that to be an exaggeration. You still see shepherds and insurgents in every parts of the world, like Afghanistan, use a lot of old 19th century rifles from the old British Army with effectiveness against American soldiers. Why should it be any different with the AK-47, an even more versatile, solid and popular gun?

And If I’m not mistaken, the modified AK-47 in the trailer is the “lower-class” weapon, and probably the gun that is used by the underprivileged society down on earth, compared to the other high-tech weaponry we see on the trailer. The society that Damon’s character stems from is in the shape of, and maybe even worse than, today’s third world countries. The AK-47, with a touch of futuristic modification, makes perfect sense in a setting like this.

Big sci-films being released this year (although many of them already reek of mediocrity/crappiness):

    Elysium

    After Earth

    Pacific Rim

    Ender’s Game

    Oblivion

    The Prototype

    Gravity

    Star Trek Into Darkness

    Riddick

The most exciting ones are Star Trek Into Darkness, Elysium and Gravity . I’m mostly excited for Gravity, where we will see the return of Alfonso Cuaron since the amazing Children of Men — which, incidentally, had a huge influence on Blomkamp’s District 9 (and possibly also Elysium).

It’s great to see the return of sci-fi films. It’s all due to the successes of sci-fi films in 2009 (primarily Avatar, Star-Trek, District 9) that we see this reemergence. If we’re lucky, the anticipated successes of these film will set the motion for more sci-fi films the next 4-5 years (although Cameron’s Avatar-trilogy will carry a lot of this weight by itself, the way it has done it with the popularity of 3D-filmmaking).
