So Long and Thanks for All the Pineapple Soda

microphone

Everyone has things that they are passionate about. It could be anything from family to work to hobbies. When I sit back and think about my passions a few things come to mind: work, sports, television, my dogs, my health and of course; movies. I think it’s safe to say that everyone who contributes to Film Junk, who visits the website, who listens to the podcast has a passion for movies. Jay has worked very hard for his passion for movies and has made it into the business. Not only that, he’s pretty damn talented. Frank loves everything there is to love about movies. From his excellent and well-organized blu-ray collection to his mounted movie posters. Sean, even with fatherhood upon him, still finds time to not only do his 9-5 job, but to run this excellent website. I have always had a passion for movies as well and it has taken me to TIFF for 16 consecutive years. As always though, when you get older and busier, things can get in the way of your passions. Time becomes an enemy and as I like to say poetically, shit happens. Including my commute to work, my job demands 10+ hours a day. I’ve had to make lifestyle choices over the last year to improve my health which require me to be and ready to go at 5am. Add in my desire to care for and see my dogs whenever I get to have custody, it leaves me little time to indulge in my passions.

Over the last year, I don’t think it would be a surprise to anyone to know that my performance on the podcast was not what it used to be. I speak up less in reviews, I hardly ever watch anything else and my participation in the other segments has been, shall we say, sparse. It’s not fair to Sean, Jay and Frank. It’s not fair to you, the unbelievably loyal listeners and it isn’t fair to myself. Being up so early, I have often found it difficult to remain at full attention during the podcast and if you were in the shoes of one of the other guys on the podcast and you looked across the table after spending a few minutes talking about how much you loved a movie only to see your friend barely keeping his eyes open you’d be pretty annoyed. You might even feel disrepected. It is because of my less than stellar performance and lacklustre participation over the last year that Sean, Jay and Frank had to make the difficult decision in asking me to step down from the podcast.

Before anyone sends in an e-mail or comment saying negative towards their decision, take a moment and really read what I just wrote. Can any of you blame them? I can’t. Work takes up a lot of my time. Getting myself healthy takes a massive commitment. I haven’t even talked about the last two months on the show. I went through a very difficult break-up and it was brutally hard on me and I couldn’t keep it together. I showed up to the Die Hard premium intoxicated. Although, the guys were sympathetic to my situation, it was pretty goddamn irresponsible and disrespectful to the hard work that they put in.

Basically, this is my apology to you, the listener, and it’s my public apology to Sean, Jay and Frank for letting them down. I hope they will accept it and we can continue to remain friends. Sean has left the door open for me to return from time to time after I’ve taken an extended period away from the show, which is way more than I deserve. These guys don’t owe me anything and they gave me plenty of chances to shape up and I couldn’t do it.

As you’re all aware, the Film Junk podcast doesn’t hold anything back. It’s always been full disclosure because there’s a connection to the listeners and vice versa that is unlike any other podcast. There was no way I was going to disappear without letting you know what went down. It’s what you deserve. Always has been. Always will be. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to appear on this show and talk movies with my friends for the last number of years. I’ve appreciated being welcome to Sean and Frank’s homes week after week. I’ve appreciated meeting many of you over the years at the theatre, at TIFF and wherever else you creeps show up. I’m kidding. It’s been a hell of a run and I wanted to thank Sean, Jay and Frank for their patience over the years. I hope they were never truly disappointed with what I brought to the show.

Who knows what the future holds, but for now I say thank you and bid you all adieu.

  • Markus

Wow, this feels really sad. Such a suprise and let down :(
Gonna miss you very much Greg, you were always awesome! Good luck with everything on the side of the Podcast, hope to hear your awesome laughter soon again, take care and thanks for all the fun the past few (not that few when i think about it) years!

    The Gasman lives!

  • Waxwrath

    Love you buddy. Take care.

  • csidle

I’m sorry to hear that you won’t be on the show anymore, Greg. You were a good host and your roaring laughter will be sorely missed. I’ve listened to you and the other gang on FJ for years to relieve stress, whether it be personal relationship trouble or while on my way to an exam. You guys have been awesome to have around, and I’ve never felt like you weren’t up to par, Greg. I hope you have a good time doing your thing. Thanks for the hours of entertainment.

  • David

Quite a shock to read this, good sir. I started listening three years ago, and you guys quickly became a must-listen every week. At first the three, then the four, now the three again all are very different but amazing podcasting personalities that balanced each other out well. Greg, your presence will be sorely missed, but real life has a way of imposing. I guess we can’t always take a labor of love like a weekly podcast for granted. Good luck with your endeavors and for the rest of you guys, it’s still hard to believe this kind of quality film-loving entertainment comes without a price, except when I’m a buying the premiums.

  • Hey Greg, I did send this in a while ago with the hopes of hearing your laugh. I hope you can enjoy this as the sloppy seconds of a parting gift. The Golden Age of Film Junk and you were right in the middle of it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtCy2qVCqoU

  • I can’t believe how much this post affected me. All I can say is love ya, big guy! Take care of yourself and hopefully we’ll hear from you again on future installments of the Film Junk podcast.

  • Lord

Thanks for the great Time! I think your Voice will be missed on the show over the whole world (At least one guy in Germany ;) .

Have a good time! (And I hope we will hear the Gas Mans voice in some guest appearances again )

  • Bas

So sad to hear you’re leaving, Greg! I guess everything has already been said, but I have to chip in.

I loved your presence on the show, your great radio voice, booming laugh, work-related stories, raunchy remarks and most certainly your opinions on movies. Thank you.

And to echo what’s been said before: you feel like a friend I’ve never met. That might sound dumb, but that’s exactly what it feels like. Of course you need interaction and a mutual liking to be real friends. If you met the 153 (and counting) of us you’d find that half of us are dicks, but we love you man!

I hope we can hear you return to the podcast, if not permanently at least as a guest. But my bigger hope is you can reshape your life like you are reshaping your bod and be happy in whatever you do. Take care Greg!

  • Fredrik

Sad to hear it, your voice and personality will be missed. I do hope for those guest appearances in the future.

Good luck with everything Greg, and take care.

  • Nick P.

I don’t know about this, you at your worst is better than any of us at our best.

  • T. Heilman

It’s testament to Film Junk that this event could touch so many people, myself included. For all the comments, both positive and negative, people care, about a podcast featuring people most of us have never met. That’s amazing. My thanks to Greg for all the hard work, insightful commentary and of course, your powerful personality. You are irreplaceable and the show will never be the same.

  • GorgonJones

I’ll miss the emphatic pronunciation of “brrr-Rutal.”

All the best, Greg. Hopefully we’ll see ya down the road on some return-spots.

  • ah

First time commenting here even though I’ve listened to the podcast for years.

Greg, I really felt emotional as I read your post; really gonna miss your contribution to the show which was a unique one with many hilarious moments. It’s sad that you’re leaving and sadder still under these circumstances, where you’ve obviously been through some difficult times in your personal life. I wish you the best for the future and hope you remain friends with Sean, Jay and Frank and return to the podcast as a guest.

Thanks for sharing your life and your love of films with your fans. You’re a class act.

  • Leif

This news is indeed a bummer. As mentioned on one of your recent podcasts, I agree that more people (at least my age 47)are not going to the theatre as much as they once did and instead are watching more on television. That being said, I am able to make time to stay “in the know” of what’s out there from my discovery of the FilmJunk podcast many years ago and I can always make time to listen in with you “friends”. I have always been amazed at the time commitment you all give to this as I sometimes get behind on even the listening portion, but I greatly appreciate the entertainment and Greg, you were a big part of that. Though I started listening b/c I love movies, I continue to listen to hear all of you talk about your lives and to make me laugh. Greg, I hope you once again get time to make guest appearances as you generally were (no offense Frank), the KOC on the show. Much luck in everything you do and I look forward to hearing you again in the future.

  • Jason_Miami

Total bummer, man. You were invaluable to the show and it sucks to see you go. Break-ups are a total bitch and getting your real life on track far outweighs any demands listeners like me can make. I don’t know how Sean keeps it up, let alone you, so it’s understandable that you’re exhausted and need a break. I hope to hear your sultry baritone on the podcast again, though, so don’t leave that open door ajar for too long. I hope everything works out alright for you. Adios Gasman and thanks for all the memories.

  • Frank Vair

Wow… A total shock. Greg, you will be missed. I’ve listened to FJ for around 6 years and I always appriciated your take on movies and life. I’ll miss the stories, and your presence in the podcast; you guys got me through some tough times with grad school and other personal things, but every week I could count on film junk to give me several hours of relief from the stress of life. Glad to hear you are taking care of yourself through working out, an there is an entire community here pulling for you. Thanks for the years of entertainment and laughs and I look forward to your triumphant return to the podcast.

  • Eamon

I read this in the wee hours last night and had the craziest dreams afterwards, so I had to check again today to double check. Sad news indeed, but ‘life finds a way’ of moving forward and as much as I would like all my podcasts to go on forever in their best state, it cannot be so. Thank you for all the fun jokes and excellent voice on the podcast for so long. I hope you can be a semi-regular guest so you can inject a steady supply of goofy stories from your everyday life, which seems more interesting than the other hosts! Live long and prosper, Greg.

  • ChrisW

To echo the other comments posted, I would like to wish you all the best in the future. As others have pointed out, your letter was dignified and a classy. Maybe we’ll hear you hosting Ball Junk in future or a TV podcast discussing the merits of WipeOut.

Also, I think Reed’s comment was nice too. You guys didn’t always agree with each other, but it sounded like you all had a lot of fun on the 400th episode (which, by the way, was fantastic)

I don’t think I’ve ever heard how Gregg got with his ex. Can anybody be so kind as to let those of us who haven’t heard it know the episode number?

    Good luck, Gregg!

  • ultimolee

Wow no Greg, no Hamilton stories, no booming laughter….feels like i’ve been told the shows ending

    :'(

Without Greg the whole show always feels longer, he’s the lubricant god damn it!!

  • Dan

Greg, whilst you may not have contributed as much lately, you have nothing to apologise for. I slightly understand Sean, Jay and Franks reasons but you were always entertaining and as the 169 comments above me prove, you were loved by the fans and will be missed.

Good luck with whatever you pursue in future and I seriously hope this isn’t the last we hear from you! =)

Where are we supposed to send the pinapple soda now?

  • Fox Mulder

Who is going to make that chuckle in the background now???? This is terrible news (even on the 3rd day of knowing)! Your laughter on the Top 10 of the year podcast is amazing and made me loooool like never before while listening to you. Hurry back please!

  • ryanh

    I think Jay’s to blame.

    He’s an awful, awful man.

  • James

Now that Greg is bidding adieu, who is going to counterweight for Jay’s ever growing pretentiousness?

Frank just got more important to the show for me.

  • like all great sports stars that move on, only to hunger for more…

I await Greg’s return to the ROW THREE podcast!!!!

it will be sad and depressing like Jordan on the Wizards, Pippin on the Rockets, and for Greg – Kobe eventually ON THE MAVERICKS!!!

  • curtis

    JUMP THE SHARK!!!

I always enjoyed on the show even if Jay, Sean, and Frank felt like he was not contributing enough.

To me, Filmjunk it about friends sitting around discussing movies… asking Greg to leave is a real bummer. I hope they ask him back… he was one of the original three…

    BOOOOOOOOO

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it is about friends discussing movies. But sometimes, when you perceive disrespect from friends you have to take a step back. The Film Junk boys are just unlucky enough to have to deal with it on a public forum.

  • 1138sw

Sorry to hear that you are leaving! Hope you can get your life back together and come back to the podcast! It really will not be the same without you!

Definitely enjoyed your humor and critiques as well as your writing contributions.

Wish you well and hope to hear you again on the podcast someday!

  • ryanh

I think Frank might be suffering with depression lately. Is he unemployed still, or just working an uninspiring job?

Jay’s ego’s as wide as Canada. He’s buried so deep in the other two that I’m sure they can tell us how his cock tastes.

    Boo and hiss.

  • Owozifa

Sorry to see you go Greg, but I know how it goes all too well. I actually went through a similar thing with a web site, and I’m still on great terms with everyone. People are likely making too big a deal out of this and inserting some kind of drama or animosity. If this crazy project known as Film Junk was turning into “have to” rather than “want to” that’s always an issue that needs to be worked on.

Hoping you enjoy your “vacation” and that you do pop up from time to time. At least as much as Reed, anyway.

This is one listener that doesn’t need an apology, though. You need to do what’s right for you.

  • ryanh

jay out, jay out, jay out!

    who’s with me?!

    oh…

  • @curtis,

Actually, Greg isn’t a member of the “Original Three.” Space Junk was originally Sean, Jay, and Chen (Chin?).

I started listening to this podcast around episode 27, and while I’m sad to see Greg go, the show has to occasionally change as people live their lives. Chen exited, Greg came, Frank came in, and now another exit.

The evolution will continue, but hopefully Film Junk in some form will remain. I fear the day that the announcement comes that the show is stopping. THAT’S when I will lose my shit.

  • The Corey

    The beginning of the end…

  • Liney

    @curtis

Totally agree – people forget that Greg wasn’t strictly there from the start. And yes, if the filmjunk podcast ever ends, that will be the day that I go to the company in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and get my memory erased, just so that I can start listening from the beginning again and pretend that it’s current.

I sometimes imagine an eighty year old me finding an old hard-drive and sticking on a show, and thinking “I remember – that’s how things were in the early part of the century”. Just like good pop music makes you nostalgic, so do podcasts. It amazes me how a small a percentage of people listen to podcasts, but to those who do, they can hold a very special place in the heart. Sometimes I think there’s a good fictional film to be made about a podcast and the audience’s relationship to it, but then like I say, podcasts are a minority thing, so most people wouldn’t relate.

On a side note, whilst we’re all sad on some level to see Greg go, it shouldn’t be forgotten that these sort of podcasts are dependant on the participants putting in the time to watch films, and that’s a big commitment. Sometimes I can’t believe how much stuff Kurt from Row Three watches, and he has a family as well. But unfortunately, if you can’t put in that commitment (which most of us couldn’t), you can’t really contribute in a meaningful way. So in a way the decision is made by that very fact.

  • CrisL

Sounds like a bunch of arse as we say in kiwiland. Farewell and much good luck to your future. You will be missed from a huge fan of FJ.

  • jonathan

So sorry to hear you’re leaving Film Junk Greg. Have enjoyed listening to you over the years but more importantly I hope you maintain a good friendship with the rest of the guys.

  • Carl Mayer

I suggest we declare April 8th a national mourning day.

And this decision is fucking ridiculous, and has made me loose a lot of respect for the crew (I’m getting sick by the thought of how you guys are gonna justify the action on the next episode). One of the main incidents that was mentioned was the fact that he showed up drunk to a premium show. Ok, so the fuck what? Filmjunk has been all about a small, independent film blog and show; intoxication is one of the things we expect, and accept. And if it helps, I think many of us would love to see all of you drunk on the show. Ask anyone what the best FJ moments are, and they’ll instantly point to Jay’s songs, Nagy visits, or when something weird happends. None of those moments contained any formality or sense of seriousness. I wouldn’t even be surprised if I was told that Jay was drunk half of the time he was singing, being racist, or taking his microphone to the toilet. But that’s the moments we want, the moments we crave.

When it comes to Greg’s so-called passiveness, i believe a lot of people, in particulour La Menthe and Sean P, have already noted that it wasn’t a problem for any of us.

I think we listeners should have a say in the matter, as the whole purpose of this charade is to please us, and the fact that we are the ones holding it alive. What may be 200 comments (and more), in which there is an unanimous agreement to the dislike of this decision, should give a clear signal that not only should he stay, but that you should strap his fucking arms to a chair and a microphone to his mouth if you want to have a healthy viewership (or listenership, or whatever the fuck you call it) in the future. I myself will probably listen in on the next show to be given a full explanation of decision, and stop listening to the from thereon, as i can’t see myself listening to the show knowing someone is always missing. I paid for all of the premium shows, and will also stop subscribing to those.

Goodbye Greg. I sincerely hope you will get out of your depression, and will find enoyment in life. If it helps, know that you have given enjoyment in many, many hours of our life.

  • Henrik

People want this decision redone about as much as they wanted Indiana Jones 4!

  • Jessie Terwick

O boy. First Chavez, and now this. FJ will never be the same.

  • Bas

But they won’t regret it like they did with Indy 4.

Seriously though, I’m getting a bit sick of the negativity aimed at the rest of the crew. Greg clearly has had a lot to deal with. Releasing him of the obligation to keep up Film Junk through it all makes sense. I think the decision was made primarily with Greg’s benefit in mind and as a distant second the quality of the podcast.

And they didn’t comment on his absence on the podcast because they wanted him to bring the news himself. I’m sure they will elaborate on the matter in the next show.

  • Bas

Specifically, Carl, we DON’T have a say in this matter – this is between the crew. They don’t owe us shit, we owe them.

  • Z

utterly ridiculous over-reaction here. we all love greg, but it’s not like the rest of the gang betrayed us, or him. from what we know, what greg has written, it sounds like they did only what they thought was best for them, their friendship and the health of the show!

greg admits to not being a great addition to the show recently, and as much as i hate to say it I have to agree. listening back to shows from a couple of years ago and he was like a totally different person, more recently he’s just faded into the background while frank, jay and sean have all been on great form still, especially on the premiums. even reed has been fantastic on his rare appearances! greg just need some time to get back on track, which i’m sure he will do quickly.

think before you speak, think about the context! this is just a show and website that some guys do as a hobby, i hardly think they’re rolling in cash from a few premium casts and i’m sure they only did it with greg and the podcasts best interests in mind.

  • La Menthe

@176, hahahahhhah, made my day. Thank you for the great laugh!

  • La Menthe

    *Correction: @178

  • Greggory Daniels

I’ve never commented before, but I feel the need to say happy trails.

I’m concerned about the hole this leaves in the podcast. Greg’s “everyman” take on films, though sometimes not in line with my own, were a refreshing contrast to the more intense, dare-I-say-it…pretentious stance that some of the other guys take from time to time.

You’ll be missed, Greg. I’m listening to you filmjunk…I’m listening and always judging…

  • Kasper

People also need to remember that Greg showing up drunk is not cool or awesome – especially since he has earlier told us that he specifically never drinks alcohol. He’s not like Frank who likes to drink when he’s partying, unless he has suddenly changed his way in the past few years. So Greg turning up drunk is a very bad sign.

  • bard

The sense of entitlement that some people seem to have here is ridiculous. These guys have been donating hours and hours of their lives every week (for free, other than the monthly premiums) recording a podcast, updating the site with news and polls and contests, and basically keeping people entertained for years and years. If anything, we owe them for what they have done. If Greg wanted to stay, or could stay, I’m sure he would have. It’s a decision that he made and the guys are going to continue the show.

Above all else, these guys have been best friends for years and that friendship absolutely comes before doing a podcast for a bunch of strangers to listen to. I feel lucky that they do it.

Keep on keeping on Frank, Jay, and Sean. I can’t wait for each episode, every week.

Greg, hope you continue to tweet, do your TIFF Reports as a Film Junk Correspondent, and hopefully return for guest spots as it fits your schedule.

  • Ok everyone calm down…we love Greg but come on he is an average reviewer at best. This will work out fine, its simple math; the difference between scheduling 4 individuals versus 3 is HUGE!! Think about it guys, it needed to be done long ago. Im sure Greg will return every few months for a show and that will be awesome! Think how crazy those shows will be with a refreshed Greg full of new material. As amazing as Greg’s voice and laugh have been – his sometimes lackluster motivation and comments like “no time to much work” will not be missed.

All this transition needs is, as I have always said, is the remaining individuals (+ guests) not to fear Jay’s wrath in debates. More good film debate along with the humor and kinship will keep filmjunk rollin until the 1000 episode.

Im behind you Sean, Frank and Jay! Lead us!

  • Larry

Wow. This is crazy. Yes, we all loved Greg on the show. He’s a funny dude and broke up some of the more serious film discussion with a little levity. That’s the balance that made the show great. I don’t think his abilities as a reviewer were all that important to the show. Let’s be honest, Greg is the guy that sits behind us most of the time at the theatre and laughs at everything that is terribly unfunny and is the only one laughing, but somehow makes us think it’s funny too. I’m sure Greg is fine. He tweeted yesterday that he got the girl back. We’re all going to be okay.

  • Man, it breaks my heart that you won’t be on the show anymore, I can’t count how many times you’ve made me burst out laughing while I’m in the library but I understand and I’m glad that you do too. Frank, Sean and Jay, I’m sure this was a tough decision to make and I think of you all highly for being able to make it.
I look forward to your return sir.

  • curtis

just like Greg, I am out!! This seems to happen to certain entities when they start taking themselves to seriously. They lose sight of what made them fun in the first place. I always enjoyed Greg because he added a different voice to the podcast. Frank is too much of a fanboy of the podcast to be as valuable as Greg. I enjoyed his view of TIFF the most… that will be sadly missed.

I’m sure Frank is laughing all the way to the podcast… he got his wish…
