Monday Morning Box Office Report: Evil Dead Dismembers the Competition

Lou Taylor Pucci

It was a busy April weekend at the box office with a remake and a re-release both helping to bring out moviegoers in decent numbers. Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake hacked its way to the top with a $26 million debut, which is clearly way more than the original and all of its sequels made combined. Horror movies continue to be quite profitable this year as Evil Dead is the fourth horror flick to open over $20 million in the past few months. The Croods and G.I. Joe: Retaliation were essentially deadlocked for second place with $21.1 million, while Jurassic Park 3D opened to $18 million, slightly more than Titanic 3D made around the same time last year. Olympus Has Fallen rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere both The Place Beyond the Pines and Trance have been doing great business on just a handful of screens and will be poised to jump into the top 10 when they expand next weekend.
