Can we agree that while Evil Dead may have been a disappointment, we want more horror movies in this same vein? Old school!

  • Henrik

Next week should be the Les Blank episode.

  • projectgenesis

Next week should be the Annette Funicello episode. Back to the Beach is a classic.

  • Arnold Schizopolis

Sunshine definitely got better on re-watch. The first time I only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Then seeing it again last year, it was easily 5 of 5. I’m not exactly sure why the sudden change. Maybe coz I was comparing it to Prometheus. Sunshine is better executed overall. The photography and the score are superior.

I didn’t have a problem with the “slasher” third act because the “villain” wasn’t as superficial as I earlier thought. I wasn’t even positive that the Cillian Murphy character died at the end. I thought maybe he became a new lifeform. I think the story set that up through the psychologist character (who was addicted to the sun) and the slasher/villain. Maybe, I’m reading into it too much.

  • Cherry Blasters? As in, “I just had my cherry blasted last night”?

  • Matt the Kiwi

I was hoping Evil Dead would’ve been scarier. It was filmed in a forest (Woodhill Forest)about 10 miles from where I live so I was looking forward to seeing this at the theatre with a group and then driving out there to try and freak each other out.
Which reminds me, I forgot to comment on the Fantasy prem podcast ‘Willow-Starwars-LOTR’ debate. Willow was filmed in NZ so one more point for Jay I guess.

Olympus Has Fallen was Die Hard in the White House, not just in concept but in plot points. The way that the hero and villain talk to each other, the villain trying to make everyone think he’s dead, and a strike on the building and the people not knowing that the terrorist have a certain weapon. It was very similar, and I agree with Frank that Melissa Leo was terrible.

  • Wintle

Next week should be the Carmine Infantino episode.

  • Vismund

    What’s the intro-song? Sounds awesome!

  • patrik

Definitely agree that Sunshine gets better every time and it was awesome to begin with. Fantastic.

  • Essie

intro sounds like Salem, either red lights or king night.

  • Paul

Did I miss something? Where was Greg this week?

  • Nick

This is completely unrelated to this episode but does anybody remember the movie that Jay spoke about one time that involved a transformation effect that was accomplished with different colored lights?

Can’t remember what episode that was.

  • Mirco

yes, where was greg? missing without even mentioning it?! you’re not pulling a quivers on us here right?

  • pochareedtus

    i like ryan gosling

  • Paul

Nick, I believe that was the 1932 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

  • Sly

thanks guys for another awesome show

  • Lenny

Nick, I’m pretty sure it was Mario Bava’s Mask of Satan/ Black Sundy. I remember Jay talking about an ageing affect on Barbara Steele’s face that was achieved with different coloured light.

Also, it’s an awesome movie so check it out anyway.

  • Stan the Man

Yep, it’s Black Sunday. I recently listened to the episode, 339.

  • Nick

    Thank you!

  • Evan

I wonder if Jay’s ever seen the movie Threads? It’s another nuclear holocaust movie from the 80’s. I thought it was way more disturbing than The Day After.

  • Even, I haven’t seen Threads but I’ve heard great things. I’ll make sure to check it out.

  • BarBar

Threads and The War Game would make a fun British double nuclear bill…

  • patrik

It’s not exactly a murder mystery but I think that “The Ring” kind of works for that. There is a mystery and Naomi Watts does some good detecting. Love it. I’m gonna check out that Memories of Murder movie though, sounds interesting.

  • Hey Frank, was that family movie with the creepy image you were talking about Mac and Me? It was basically an ET knockoff but I remember being kind of freaked out by it when I was a kid.
