Christina Applegate Joins Vacation Reboot

When Married with Children ended in the late ’90s, it kind of seemed like Christina Applegate disappeared for a little while. Although that’s not entirely true (she did star in her own sitcom, Jesse, along with a few movies like Just Visiting), she didn’t resurface in a big way until Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in 2004 and the ABC series Samantha Who? in 2007. Most recently she was starring in Up All Night with Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph, but when NBC decided to move from a single-camera comedy to a live audience setup, she decided to leave the show. With her career once again on the upswing, it seems like she made the right decision. Now she is on the verge of landing perhaps her biggest role yet in an upcoming comedy: the wife of Rusty Griswold in New Line’s Vacation reboot.

According to THR, Christina Applegate is currently in talks to star in the new Vacation alongside Ed Helms, who has already signed on to play Rusty Grisworld (the son of Clark and Ellen). Applegate would play “Helm’s strong-willed wife who might be losing interest in him.” The plot revolves around Rusty taking his own family on a trip to Walley World when he finds out that the park is closing.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses) are both writing and directing the project, which actually seems like it might not be a complete disaster. Christina Applegate is also currently shooting Anchorman: The Legend Continues, and if she plays her cards right, I suspect she could finally make the transition to doing movies full-time. Are you a fan of this casting choice and does it make you more optimistic about a Vacation reboot?

  • I just don’t understand why they didn’t cast Anthony Michael Hall. Ed Helms is funny, but AMH could have done the job just fine.
