Monday Morning Box Office Report: Oz Retains his Throne

As expected, Oz the Great and Powerful remained at the top of the box office this weekend with none of the new releases even coming close to dethroning the Disney blockbuster. In its second weekend, the movie conjured up another $42 million, which is still more than any other movie has made in a single weekend so far this year. That being said, The Call had a surprisingly strong debut, coming in second with $17 million at a time when Halle Berry’s career seems to be failing. The public appetite for horror movies and thrillers only seems to be growing. Unfortunately The Incredible Burt Wonderstone looks like it is going to pull a quick disappearing act after opening to just $10 million, Steve Carell’s worst wide release opening ever. Elsewhere Jack the Giant Slayer and Identity Thief rounded out the top 5, while David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook quietly continued to hang in the top 10 after an astounding 18 weeks. Now that’s staying power.
