Veronica Mars Movie Funded by Kickstarter in Less Than 12 Hours

Well that didn’t take long. Less than a day after a Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund a potential Veronica Mars feature film, the project is now a go. Series creator Rob Thomas turned to fans to help raise $2 million to produce the film and they definitely came through. Warner Brothers is now on the hook to market and distribute the film, which will supposedly be shot this summer in order to make it to theatres early next year. The total is already up to $2.5 million. That’s still extremely small compared to most movie budgets, but there are 29 days left to add to that.

I have to admit, I’ve never watched an episode of Veronica Mars but I’ve always been meaning to give it a shot. The show revolves around a high school student (played by Kristen Bell) who moonlights as a private detective investigating the murder of her best friend. It seems like something I should be into, so maybe this is the push I need to get on board. Still, if this project turns out to be a success, you can bet there will be plenty more to follow. Do you want to see a Veronica Mars movie? What other TV shows would you like to see revived via Kickstarter? Check out a short promo video from Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell after the jump.

  • The show was pretty solid, particularly the chemistry between Kristen Bell and Enrico Colantoni (the actor who played her father). I thought the father/daughter relationship in the film was the glue that held it together. The writers were clearly writing for the late twenties early thirties demo, considering what sort of pop culture and other things that Mars is interested in that distinguish her from her class mates. It was a curious show that kind of lost its way when it solved the principle murder of Amanda Seyfried’s character.

I hope this opens doors. How about that once-promised Deadwood TV movie?

    Quick, start the Firefly kickstarter!!

Honestly, it’s been long enough now that I would prefer to get more Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles that Firefly.

  • I disagree — the second season is the best of the series — the big mystery in that season gives the show even more range to explore the class theme and it has Steve Guttenberg.
