David Fincher’s House of Cards Now Streaming on Netflix, First Episode Free for Non-Subscribers

Last year Netflix threw their hat into the original programming ring with Lilyhammer, a quirky crime series starring Steve Van Zandt (The Sopranos). Although it didn’t seem to register on many people’s radar, this year they have increased their efforts with a number of high profile original series including Ricky Gervais’ Derek, Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove, and the highly-anticipated fourth season of Arrested Development. Before those arrive, however, we get to see David Fincher’s House of Cards, which premieres on Netflix as of today. So what are you waiting for?
Netflix is sparing no expense to promote the show, which is a remake of the BBC mini-series of the same name. Kevin Spacey plays a ruthless politician who “will stop at nothing to conquer everything.” The cast also includes Robin Wright, Kate Mara and Michael Kelly. David Fincher directed the first two episodes himself.
I’m not totally convinced that Netflix can compete with HBO, AMC and Showtime, but debuting an entire season at once is an interesting move. Netflix is so intent on using this to gain new subscribers that they’ve even decided to give away the first episode for free. Will you be checking out House of Cards? If so, what did you think?
