A couple of years ago, we heard that a proposed sequel to Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland was being shopped around as a TV series as opposed to a feature film (thanks in part to the success of AMC’s The Walking Dead). Sony was teaming up with Fox to make it happen, although it wasn’t entirely clear if Fox would actually broadcast the show or if they would just help produce it. Now this week we have learned that the show is still in development and it has found a somewhat surprising new home. Amazon recently announced their intention to follow in the footsteps of Netflix, and it looks like Zombieland will be one of the first forays into original programming for their online streaming service Amazon Prime. The news comes courtesy of Broadcast Now, although the full article is behind a pay wall so I don’t know what else they have to say about it. They do refer to it as a “remake” however, as opposed to a sequel, so perhaps it will attempt to retell some of the events from the film. Last week io9 obtained casting sheets for the new show, which confirms the return of the film’s main characters Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock, along with some new faces as well.

It seems a safe assumption that they will maintain the half-hour format that was originally proposed. Ruben Fleischer is not involved, however, it’s unclear if screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are still on board (they were attached back when Fox and Sony were working on it). Either way, I think this is a good choice for Amazon to kick off their original programming. Given the insatiable appetite for zombies out there, I am sure this show will have no trouble finding an audience. Are you interested in a Zombieland TV series?
