First Image of Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road

By far one of the biggest questions hanging over the 2013 movie season is whether or not we will actually get to see George Miller’s upcoming reboot / sequel / remix Mad Max: Fury Road before the end of next year. After floating around in development hell for a couple of decades, George Miller finally decided back in 2009 that he was going to make a fourth Mad Max movie with Tom Hardy in the lead role instead of Mel Gibson. Still, the project continued to hit several snags and at one point Miller was even contemplating an animated version instead.

Recently we learned that Mad Max: Fury Road did finally come together and officially wrapped production in Namibia this month. What’s more, we now have the first bit of visual evidence to prove it. An autographed photo of Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky turned up over on Ain’t It Cool News earlier this week, seemingly passed on from someone who was involved in the production. Warner Brothers has since confirmed that it is the real deal. So what do you think… does Hardy look like a decent substitute for the Gibber? Check out a larger version of the new Mad Max after the jump.

Nice pic, but still loves me the Gibson.

I don’t think the question should be if Hardy is a good substitute for Mel Gibson but rather, is he a good Mad Max? I am fucking stoked for this (and happy Mel isn’t in it)to the point I need to get my expectations in check. I have no doubt Hardy will be great, it’s Charlize Theron that worries me.

Yes I’ll be there when it’s released, but this kinda film makes me nervous again in regards to this ever on-going remaking of everything, and reboot is just creative accounting for remake. Also don’t you think Tom Hardy looks like Josh Lucas a bit.

    G. Miller was planning to do animation as an extra, not instead. But supposedly the story of it was “so good”, that they decided to make another film of it(the trilogy plans). I was involved in pre-production of this film for a long time. Now I’ve been off the project for years and I’m not sure whether he is still planning to make the animation though.
His initial plan was to make an animation, film and a game (they are doing the game still, in his production office in Sydney).

    Get ready to be dissappointed.

Hmmm, that’s a good choice. I love one, laugh at one, and hate one. Would be keen to hear the guys thoughts on such.

@T, what’s your beef with Gibson? He’s a great actor.

  • SunGun

Hardy lacks Gibson’s charisma and he always leaves me indifferent.

I guess the Mad Max franchise has fallen into the likes of James Bond. It is always good to see fresh takes on a character, in fact, with that being said I honestly do not mind seeing more films of the Mad Max-Wasteland-world with different actors as Max in different adventures.

  • Mad Max was an okay film, with some cool ideas. Beyond Thunderdome was an okay film, with some 80’s cheesiness. Road Warrior is a bloody brilliant film, that’s had its plot and underlying premise reused and stolen hundreds of times.

Some good flicks, but adding another good movie (or even only an okay one) would not hurt these movies. I’m okay with a reboot/continuation/whatever.

    But goddamn Road Warrior rules.

    Straight up….
The Road Warrior will always be one of my all time favorite films. My girlfriend looked at me funny when I told her that I had bought the soundtrack, last year. lol… I always enjoyed the music to all three. Too bad Brain May & Maurice Jarre, have passed on. I wonder who’s composing the music for this one. It would be awesome if George Miller got John Williams to do it; considering the fact that they worked together on The Witches of Eastwick. All in all….I’ve been waiting a long time for this; and am happy to know that it’s a sure thing.
