Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim Trailer

At long last, the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s giant robot vs. giant monster movie Pacific Rim has finally hit the web. The story revolves around giant alien creatures (literally called Kaiju) that rise up from a dimensional rift under the sea and attack the Earth’s population. Humanity fights back with the help of massive robots called Jaegers, which are controlled by two pilots using neural links. If you grew up watching Voltron, Robotech or even Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, this is the Hollywood blockbuster you’ve been dreaming of!

Aside from the all-too-familiar Inception sound that is plaguing every trailer as of late, I think it looks pretty impressive. I do think the movie could fall victim to some of the same problems as Michael Bay’s Transformers in that the giant CG battles run the risk of becoming incoherent. That being said, I trust Guillermo del Toro’s vision a lot more than Michael Bay’s, and the creature designs look pretty damn cool. Pacific Rim hits theatres on July 12th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think!

    thats glados’ voice

What a piece of ….great great filmmaking / trailermaking. This looks like a great movie and hopefully a real blcokbuster for del torro. And then on to Hellboy III.

    COOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl

  • Steve

This looks so good. When I described the synopsis to someone else, they said “Like Transformers?” but I think the key difference here is that you really get a sense of scale, and how much power it takes to move these things. Though I’m still not sure why you need two people to drive one.

  • Steve

Oh, and the robot voice sounds exactly like the computer from Portal.

I’m not sure what to make of this but some scenes do indeed look spectacular to say the least.

I really enjoy Del Tore’s work especially Pan’s Labyrinth which I think was an exceptional film. He did wonders with Hellboy too which I think was vastly underrated.

Hope he brings something special here…if it’s got his name attached I will look forward to it!

Fanboys creaming their pants over this is puzzling to me. Battleship looked dumb because it was just a Transformers clone, but this is awesome? Because it’s Del Toro?

  • Johnny

    Fanboys of what? Del Toro?

  • cap

Del Toro, sci-fi, anime. You know… those weirdos.

  • Steve

I wouldn’t call this a Transformers clone. The idea of giant fighting robots has always been awesome, there have just been some really poor executions of it. This looks like a good one.

  • Theman

Battle ship looked dumb because its fucking battle ship! Transformers looks cool but Bay couldn’t get out of his own way. This movie is more in line with Japanese giant monster movies and anime. It looks awesome IMO.

  • La Menthe

GLaDOS really took me out of the trailer. I was expecting and offensive joke of some kind.

  • Jonny Ashley

Del Toro really knows how to stroke my lovecraft boner

  • This looks no better than those stupid Transformers movies. All those big site movie bloggers that are saying this looks amazing, are only saying that because it’s GDT.

  • Henrik

You guys are crazy, this is what the world needs.

It’s only a matter of time, before we get a real Gundam movie…

  • Cy-Ed

looks like giant Real Steel 2

  • Markus Krenn

So they did make a Neon Genesis Evangelion Live Action movie afterall?

  • jarrod

dont say Real Steel 2, Sean will get teary eyed

  • I don’t get this at all. Giant fighting robots just seems incredibly unappealing, I don’t see how anyone can build up an attachment to them. Terminator did it well but mainly because there was an actor portraying the machine. I’ll wait for the reviews on this one.

  • Steve

You’re not supposed to get attached to the robots, your supposed to get attached to the people piloting them. You don’t get attached to the X-wing in Star Wars, but you don’t want it to blow up because Luke is in it.

  • Owozifa

    Decent monster designs?

    Be still my heart.

    Potential awesomeness.

  • ProfessionalCynic

Sorry to come late to the party, but that computer voice is THE EXACT same as the one in the Xbox360 Game Portal/2. Very distracting.

  • Yes it is the same voice actor and it seems like Guillermo del Toro actually intended for GLaDOS to make an unofficial cameo in the film.

  • Asterid

I’m with Markus on this one. I’ve already seen shots that look like direct shots from Evangelion Neon Genesis! It might not be the identical story but, looks like del Toro is giving some nods!

  • Henrik

Well, anybody who’s going to direct a movie about giant robots, would be wise to look to Japan and rip off their awesome shit.. Can you blame him? I just wish all anime had a budget like this movie.

  • oohaarlandlubbers

Is Del Toro really Michael Bay? It’s obvious from the trailer that this is a fantastic idea that will be ruined by the lack of a good director. There will be no story, no acting, and no reason to support the industry.
