The Lone Ranger Trailer #2

If there’s one thing you can always count on with a Jerry Bruckheimer film, it’s that it’s gonna be big. The new trailer for The Lone Ranger, however, saves most of the explosions and CG set pieces for the end, instead choosing to give us a bit of back story for The Lone Ranger himself. We also get to see Johnny Depp talk to a horse and say “kemosabe” for what it’s worth.

With Gore Verbinski at the helm, it’s no surprise that the movie looks a lot like The Pirates of the Caribbean series… but will Johnny Depp’s Tonto have quite the same appeal as Jack Sparrow? I’m not entirely convinced that this will be the blockbuster they’re hoping for. Armie Hammer plays the lead role while Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson and William Fichtner also co-star. The Lone Ranger hits theatres on July 3rd; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

    I could not give a splat less about the Pirates franchise but this looks like a fuck-ton of fun.

    Not sure what to make of this…funny yet campy…not quite what I expected.

    All it’s missing is a giant mechanical spider.

    But seriously it does look like it has a fair amount of potential to be awesome. Its success depends on Django Unchained’s genre layover and Johnny Depp’s somewhat-shaky bankability. It will either be a John Carter-level bust or a solid franchise starter in the vein of the Pirates movies.

    I don’t know about Depp playing Tonto. He sounds stereotyped like a Mofo. I hope this bombs, for the sake of any “actual” Native Americans, that would have wanted or should have gotten that role…. Not a highly well know actor (that you see in everything), with that small fraction of Indian ancestry in his blood. Should have tried getting someone like Raoul Trujillo (who was awesome in Apocalypto)to play the part…. He looks more like the original Tonto aka Jay Silverheels anyway, and who was actually a Native American. Next thing you know, they’re gonna end up using Depp to play
    President Obama. Lol……they probably would too.
