Kevin Smith to Close Out Career with Clerks III?

Well, you’ve gotta hand it to Kevin Smith… even as he is on the verge of leaving the movie industry altogether, somehow he is managing to keep his foot in the door and the conversation focused on him. Just yesterday we posted the news that his upcoming hockey film Hit Somebody was going to become a TV mini-series, which meant that if he really was going to retire from directing, Red State just became his final film. But before any of us actually had time to let that news sink in, Smith has taken to the internet once again to start plugging yet another “final” project. As it turns out, he is hoping to return to the characters that started his career and close off the trilogy with Clerks III.

The actual announcement came on Twitter earlier today, where Smith had the following to say:

“Since HIT SOMEBODY is now gonna be a mini-series, yes – that leaves room for a new final flick before I retire from directing feature films… So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III. #TaDa”

It’s not the first time he has talked about making a third Clerks film, as he had previously hinted that he would consider revisiting Dante and Randall in their late ’40s when he was also in his late ’40s. Since Smith is only 42 now, that would put the movie at least a few years away. Does this mean that he is moving the timeline up a bit?

My guess is that he is still not committed to making the film right away, he is simply letting everyone know that he’s not done making movies just yet. However, it’s interesting that Jeff Anderson is apparently the hold out and that Smith is using this opportunity to put some pressure on him. Based on how Clerks II turned out, maybe Jeff Anderson knows what he’s doing. What do you think, is Clerks III an appropriate way for Kevin Smith to retire from filmmaking? Is Smith just unable to let go or do you see potential in revisiting these characters one last time?

  • “Based on how Clerks II turned out…” What’s that supposed to mean? I found Clerks II to be pretty darn entertaining, though a Clerks III is pushing it.

Retire. Don’t retire. I wish Kevin Smith would stop treating this as though we’re going to lose one of the great artists of modern era cinema.

  • Nino

I agree with Jack, Clerks 2 was entertaining. Hope he has something good for the third one, it would be fitting for the last one.

  • Scott

    Drama queen.

  • El Ohroy

I liked Clerks 2. There were some absolutely hilarious scenes in that movies. It deserves a rewatch, Sean.

    thats coo

  • I actually re-watched Clerks II the other day. It really doesn’t hold up, and I remember walking out of the original screening (Kevin was in attendance) saying “It feels like he made Clerks, waited 10 years and then made another movie, without anything in between”. I can feel the writing through out. I once heard Kevin Smith explain his writing style for that film, saying he basically had beats he wanted to hit and he just had to figure out a way to patch them together.

I have always been a huge Kevin Smith fan (I enjoy the Smodcast network) but as I get older, I see I was more rooting for a guy who made films I could see me or my friends making (in terms of skill and storytelling), not so much rooting for great cinema.

That being said, I would watch Clerks III, but I am with Sean on this one, based on Clerks II, I expect nothing.

Fine, let him make Clerks 3, and ruin whatever legacy he had in his film-making career. I have nothing but disdain for the cry baby ever since he lied to the fans not only about Red State being four-walled in order to raise funds for a traditional theatrical run but also the idea that Red State was a horror movie, it was half-assed attempt to say religious fundamentalism is bad, no shit Sherlock. He only has self-promotion not the least bit of substance. Smodcast overall is 50% commercial plugs, again no substance just promotion. He can talk about how evil airlines are all he wants while his ass grows exponentially by the second. Everything is everyone else’s fault for his lack of enthusiasm, greedy airlines, studios devoid of any creative direction and Bruce Willis, I am sick and tired of his whining. Retire already you fat jackass.

I reckon Smith and Soderbergh are trying to out-retire each other…

Dustin nailed it. The only thing fatter than his ass is his ego.

  • Dustin

Hey BarBar, if Magic Mike is any indication it will be long drawn out, full of beefcake and the guys will cheer while women walk away utterly disappointed :)
