First Photo from Ender’s Game Starring Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield

It looks like 2013 is shaping up to be a very promising year for science-fiction on the big screen. Between Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim and J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, there is no shortage of promising projects coming in many different shapes and sizes. Then in November, Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi classic Ender’s Game will also finally be getting the feature film adaptation it so rightly deserves.

This week EW has debuted the first official photo from the film where we can see Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) staring down Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield). We also get a glimpse of some of the other recruits and the overall look of the Battle School where they are being trained. Is it everything you had hoped it would be? Ender’s Game hits theatres on Nov. 1st; check out a bigger version of the photo after the jump and see what you think.

Kids are way, way too old… reminds me of what Jay said about Jonah Hex on this one, “Some movies just shouldn’t be made”

  • Dang, I’ve been meaning to get to this book for years. Now it goes against my hipster rule of not reading books that have a “now a major motion picture” sticker on the front.

@Colin, I was thinking the same thing. It kind of undercuts the theme of the book if they’re older. I’m also assuming some of the violence will be toned down.

I’m curious about how they’ll handle the “simulation” stuff, particularly toward the end.

Ender was also younger and smaller than most the the other kids if I remember correctly.

  • 2013.

  • Thanks. I’m glad someone was paying attention. ;)

  • Yeah, I thought Ender was pretty much the smallest kid in the school, next to Bean. And isn’t Harrison Ford just over 6 feet tall?!?!?! Knowing there is an army of people practically holding their breath for this, this would seem about the worst picture to send out.

  • Eleanor

Bear in mind we don’t know exactly what stage of the story this image is from. It could be as Ender is about to leave Battle School.
I doubt very much whether this is from his first day at school. (and hope it isn’t!)

  • Colin

@Eleanor, Doubtful… he would not be with other students in the bunks if that were the case. I’m betting this still is from late first act, early second act.

  • I’m gonna go with Colin on this one, but it still doesn’t make me feel much better.

Im afraid there is no way this wont be disappointing the true strength of this book is OSC’s ability to make you feel like Ender to know not just whats is his head but whats in his heart you cant do that without some form of inner monologue there is just only so much you can do with a camera I’ve said for years the right way to film this is in super realistic CGI with a majority of it being shot as a POV its the only way to give you the same perspective as Ender and not fuck up the story by changing the ages and making all the story sacrifices that live action forces you to make.
