Fox Cancels Independence Day 3D

Is the 3D post-conversion craze slowly dying out? Quite possibly. Major blockbusters will probably be forced to use 3D technology for the foreseeable future, especially as long as international audiences keep flocking to it. However, Hollywood seems to be cooling on the idea of re-releasing older films with 3D conversions as the general interest level seems to be falling off. Aside from The Lion King, Disney’s 3D re-releases have done progressively worse, and although both Titanic and Star Wars: Episode I put up some decent numbers, the majority of the money was made overseas. Now this week Fox has announced that they have decided to call off their 3D version of Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day.
Independence Day 3D was supposed to hit theatres on July 3rd, 2013, which would have put it up against Disney’s The Lone Ranger and Despicable Me 2. Clearly that is some pretty tough competition, although the movie would not have needed to make a ton of money to turn a profit. They could have easily moved it out of the summer months where it would have been more likely to stand out, although that would have meant giving up the July 4th marketing tie-in.
There is no official word on why they canceled the 3D re-release, but it’s interesting to note that Roland Emmerich’s next film White House Down is scheduled to hit theatres one week earlier on June 28th. Perhaps they thought that a double header of Roland Emmerich destruction would have been too much to handle? It’s also unclear if they are still pursuing two Independence Day sequels, but you’d think this would have given them valuable promotion for the upcoming films. Word on the street is that the Top Gun 3D re-release plans are also uncertain following Tony Scott’s death. Are you disappointed that we won’t get to see ID4 in 3D?
