Monday Morning Box Office Report: Cloud Atlas Disappoints, Argo Weathers the Storm

Overall it wasn’t a particularly great weekend at the box office as Hurricane Sandy kept a lot of moviegoers at bay, however, that doesn’t quite explain the failure of all of the new releases. Ben Affleck’s Argo floated to the top of the pack in its third week, which usually doesn’t happen unless the competition is pretty terrible. Hotel Transylvania also topped all newcomers although Cloud Atlas could still end up slipping past it for the #2 spot. Opening to just $9 million, Cloud Atlas proved to be a tough sell for mainstream audiences, marking the lowest debut ever for a Wachowski film (not counting their directorial debut Bound). Silent Hill: Revelation 3D was in even worse shape with $8 million, although it doesn’t have a $100 million budget to recoup. None of that compares to the failure of Chasing Mavericks, however; the Gerard Butler surfing flick opened at #13 with just $2.2 million. Yikes. It’s also worth noting that Paranormal Activity 4 dropped an astounding 70% from its opening weekend. Heading into November, it’s seems unlikely that any of these movies will redeem themselves in the coming weeks.

1. Argo — $12.3M
2. Hotel Transylvania — $9.5M
3. Cloud Atlas — $9.4M
4. Paranormal Activity 4 — $8.68M
5. Taken 2 — $8M
6. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D — $8M
7. Here Comes the Boom — $5.5M
8. Sinister — $5.07M
9. Alex Cross — $5.05M
10. Fun Size — $4.06M

It’s their fault they should have first release it to the International market.

    (auch by the way)

I have zero interest in Cloud Atlas, the trailers just makes it seem like a giant mess.

Also makes perfect sense how that Gerard Butler movie has bombed – I’ve never even heard of it! Maybe there has been some promotion in USA? Online or internationally there haven’t at least.

  • I didn’t realize until I was putting the poster outside for it Thursday night that “Chasing Mavericks” is directed by Curtis Hanson AND Michael Apted. WHAT?!?!? It was kind of under the radar, and it was never going to make money anyway, but wow, it actually has quite the pedigree for the type of film it is.

Argo is a good solid thriller, but easily something that can wait till its on tv or BD. I’m convinced that Affleck is the next Ron Howard.

Also saw Cloud Atlas which I thought was awesome. Definitely one of the best films I’ve seen this year. The storytelling alone reminds me one of the reason why I go to the movies.

I’m assuming Skyfall isn’t out yet across the pond?
I saw it last Friday. Thought it was fantastic. I’m sure it’ll top next week’s box office!
