Monday Morning Box Office Report: Paranormal Activity Past Its Prime?

Paranormal Activity 4 may have won the weekend, but I don’t think anyone will be celebrating at Paramount this week. The fourth installment in the horror franchise raked in approximately $30 million in its opening weekend, more than enough to take top spot but still the lowest opening for a Paranormal film since the original. Coming off Paranormal Activity 3’s record-breaking debut, it’s a big drop, and although the franchise is still very profitable it seems like we might be seeing the beginning of the end. Meanwhile Argo built on positive word of mouth with a stellar second weekend, dropping just 15% to hang on to the #2 spot. Hotel Transylvania jumped up to third and Taken 2 dropped to fourth, while Alex Cross rounded out the top 5, earning just $11.7 million — the lowest debut ever for a movie starring Tyler Perry. With no major blockbusters hitting theatres on Friday, next weekend is anyone’s game.
