Holy Motors Trailer

The more I hear about Leos Carax’s Holy Motors, the more intrigued I become. The movie was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year and also won the Critics’ Award at Fantastic Fest, and people can’t seem to stop talking about it. Despite all of this, I still know almost nothing about it. Now that the first U.S. trailer has arrived online, I’m finding myself drawn in by the strange imagery and yet I’m even more confused as to what it’s about.

The movie stars Denis Lavant as Mr. Oscar, a mysterious character who rides around Paris in a limo, making nine different stops each set within a different genre. In one segment, he lives in a sewer with Monsieur Merde (another character played by Lavant who previously appeared in the omnibus film Tokyo!); in another he stars in a musical with Kylie Minogue. The basic premise and the marketing both bring to mind David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, but this seems to be in a league of its own. Holy Motors is now playing in select theatres; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
