Kevin Costner to Star in Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day

Well it looks like Dirrrty Frank’s dream project just got a lot dreamier. Back in June, it was being reported that Ivan Reitman had signed on to direct a football comedy for Paramount called Draft Day, a fictional film about the general manager of the Buffalo Bills as he wheels and deals at the NFL entry draft. Now this week we have learned that the project has a pretty big name attached to the lead role in the form of Mr. Kevin Costner. What is an even bigger deal, however, is the fact that the NFL is supposedly on the verge of giving the movie their official stamp of approval, granting them permission to use the likenesses of their teams and players. Considering how stingy the NFL usually is with their license, this would be a massive win for Paramount.

According to Vulture, the NFL may not only endorse the project, but they are also considering kicking in some financial support as well. The budget is currently set at $20 million. Based on a spec script by Rajiv Joseph (Nurse Jackie) and Scott Rothman, the plot is described as follows:

“Costner would play a fictional general manager of the Buffalo Bills, perennially outgunned (and outspent) by downstate metropolitan behemoths like the New York Giants and Jets. Set over the course of a single day, it follows the GM as he parlays the first NFL draft pick (granted to the previous season’s worst team) into a series of trades that burnishes the team’s lackluster roster. Along the way, he must deal with his own family baggage as well as some surprising personal and romantic developments.”

Costner is coming off a comeback year of sorts, having just won an Emmy for Hatfields & McCoys, and landing supporting roles in both Man of Steel and Jack Ryan. As for Ivan Reitman, he hasn’t directed a memorable film since Kindergarten Cop (okay, maybe Junior!), and this could mark a comeback for him as well. What do you think, does Draft Day sound like a guaranteed touchdown or is it more of a hail mary?

Sounds like Moneyball for America’s REAL pastime. If the script is smart, I’ve no doubt Reitman and Costner can pull of some magic. We haven’t seen anything like this since Jerry Maguire, and we all know how well that went.
