Monday Morning Box Office Report: End of Watch and House at the End of the Street Finish in Dead Heat

It was an incredibly tight race at the top of the box office this past weekend with two movies deadlocked for first place and a third right behind that. Early estimates have End of Watch and House at the End of the Street tied for first place with $13 million a piece; both movies had unspectacular turnouts although they essentially fell right in line with expectations. Trouble with the Curve was not far off with approximately $12.7 million and could still end up winning the weekend, but overall it’s a bit disappointing for a Clint Eastwood flick. Finding Nemo and Resident Evil: Retribution rounded out the top 5. As for Dredd, the movie kinda bombed with just $6.3 million, proving that general audiences probably couldn’t distinguish it from the Stallone movie and that online buzz doesn’t always mean anything in the real world. P.T. Anderson’s The Master also made $5 million after rolling out to more theatres, which is about what There Will Be Blood in its first weekend going wide. Whether or not it will keep pace with that movie, however, remains to be seen.

1. End of Watch — $13M
2. House at the End of the Street — $13M
3. Trouble with the Curve — $12.7M
4. Finding Nemo — $9.45M
5. Resident Evil: Retribution — $6.7M
6. Dredd 3D — $6.3M
7. The Master — $5M
8. The Possession — $2.36M
9. Lawless — $2.32M
10. ParaNorman — $2.3M

That is really surprising about Dredd. I am not sure about the online buzz factor because it does work in some cases.
I think Paranormal Activity is one example. Audience expectations is something one definitely cannot predict.

A shame about Dredd. Hopefully it will perform strong in the rest of the world, where action seems to be doing a lot better than in USA these days – just looking at The Expendables 2 as a recent example.

Both of those movies look dreadful. I hope y’all picked something else to review.
