Guillermo del Toro’s Mama Trailer Starring Jessica Chastain

As we await next year’s release of Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s first gig behind the camera in five years, he is continuing to attach his name to plenty of projects as a producer. From The Orphanage and Splice to Julia’s Eyes and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, the previous results of his collaborations with other directors have been somewhat mixed, but at the very least they are original stories that would not have reached a wide audience without his help. This time around he is slapping his stamp of approval on a new horror movie called Mama from Spanish director Andres Muschietti.
The movie stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life, Lawless) as a young couple tasked with raising two young girls who were found living alone in the woods for five years. As they struggle to adjust to leading normal lives, they still seem to be afraid of someone or something. The trailer is eerie and fairly subtle for the most part, although there is also some imagery we’ve seen a few too many times before (ie. creepy crawling things). Mama hits theatres on January 18th; check out the trailer and the original short film on which it was based after the jump.
