Videodrome Remake Gets a Director

With so many remakes being announced on an almost daily basis, it’s no surprise that a lot of them end up getting lost in the shuffle and never make it to the big screen… which in many cases, is probably a good thing. Indeed, if one of your favourite movies gets targeted for a redo, there’s always a chance that the project will just quietly fade away, never to be heard from again. When Universal first announced a remake of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome way back in 2009, I felt confident and hopeful that it would fall into this category. The original is far too strange and abstract to make sense as a big budget mainstream film. Alas, this time around Hollywood has proven me wrong and Universal has just hired Swedish commercial director Adam Berg to make the movie his feature debut.
According to Deadline, Berg is fairly well-known in the commercial and music video world. In addition to helming videos for such bands as The Cardigans, Idlewild and Death in Vegas, he also recently won the Film Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for a Carousel ad that he made for Philips. He will direct from a script by Ehren Kruger, whose credits include Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Yep, sounds like the perfect guy to adapt a cerebral film like Videodrome.
The real question here is what a Videodrome remake would even look like. Obviously there is plenty of 1980s technology that could stand to be updated; instead of VHS tapes and rogue TV signals, the internet would be the obvious evolution of the New Flesh. However, Berg and Kruger’s take will supposedly also involve nano-technology and is being envisioned as a “large-scale sci-fi action thriller.” Something tells me this will turn out similar to Len Wiseman’s Total Recall… flashy and moderately entertaining but ultimately braindead. Are you looking forward to a big budget Videodrome remake?
