Monday Morning Box Office Report: Bourne Beats Bats

With the Olympics winding down, it seems that people were finally able to tear themselves away from the TV in order to go out and catch a movie this past weekend. That was good news for The Bourne Legacy and The Campaign, both of which had solid (although not spectacular) debuts, finally knocking The Dark Knight Rises out of first place. The Bourne Legacy earned $40 million, which was significantly less than the last Matt Damon entry, The Bourne Ultimatum ($69 million), but generally pretty good for a reboot and on par with Casino Royale, believe it or not. The Campaign came in a little below average for a Will Ferrell flick, but still did well for a political comedy, putting it above The Dark Knight Rises which fell to #3 with $19 million. Hope Springs and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days rounded out the top 5, meanwhile Len Wiseman’s Total Recall dropped a disastrous 68% to sixth place in its second weekend. Something tells me they won’t be making back that $125 million budget after all.
