Judd Apatow’s This is 40 Trailer #2

With all of the big releases that are starting to overcrowd this holiday season, I’m beginning to wonder if the odds are stacking up against Judd Apatow’s upcoming film This is 40. The first teaser trailer was a little underwhelming, and after the lacklustre performance of Funny People back in 2009, it’s clear that Apatow has started to move away from the frat boy humour that he once embraced. This new movie is trying to connect with an older audience, and yet the loose connection to Knocked Up implies a desire to attract a younger crowd. So who is this movie really for?

Of course, regardless of whether or not anyone sees the movie it could still be fantastic, and the good news is that the full theatrical trailer for This is 40 is definitely an improvement on the teaser. Although I still can’t really say there were any “laugh out loud” moments, there are definitely plenty of cute moments that we can all relate to. It feels like another very personal film with Paul Rudd playing a fictionalized version of Apatow opposite his real-life wife Leslie Mann, but there is also a sense of melancholy that threatens to undermine the humour. This is 40 hits theatres on December 21st; check out the new trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Another Judd Apatow trying to be serious movie. Probably won’t turn out well, knowing that his good films’ hearts come from the central performer, and Leslie Mann, quite frankly, isn’t a capable leading lady.

Also Apatow’s pretty out of touch this far into his career, so maybe he’s just lost his touch.

Looks to me like Apatow made the film he wanted to make. Does he have to make dick jokes forever? Maybe this isn’t going to attract the demographic that went to Knocked Up but if that means I don’t have to put up with asshole frat boys and kids texting then I will be happy. Looking forward to this.
