Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Dark Knight Routs Recall

In its third weekend, The Dark Knight Rises continues to turn away newcomers, earning another $36 million and putting up strong numbers just slightly behind The Avengers and The Dark Knight. Meanwhile, Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake was a definite disappointment for Sony, earning just $26 million, which is almost equivalent to what the original made over twenty years ago. (Just imagine what would have happened if it had opened against The Bourne Legacy.) As per usual, they’ll be hoping for foreign audiences to bail them out and help earn back the $125 million budget. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days also earned significantly less than the previous two films in the series, while Ice Age: Continental Drift and The Watch rounded out the top 5. The Olympics are being blamed for a 25% overall box office drop from the same weekend last year. Something tells me it has more to do with the lack of decent options in theatres.
