Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Dark Knight Rises Stays Strong, The Watch Gets Overlooked

Well it’s no surprise really, but in its second weekend The Dark Knight Rises continued to pack ‘em in, adding another $64 million to its coffers and also taking $122 million overseas for a current worldwide total of $537 million. Domestically, it has the third highest total for the first ten days ever, just behind The Dark Knight and The Avengers. The news wasn’t quite as good for the two new releases in theatres as both The Watch and Step Up Revolution underperformed, debuting behind Ice Age 4. The title change and poor reviews probably didn’t help The Watch, but you have to wonder if the continued success of Ted stole some of its potential audience as well. There is also the Olympics to fall back on as an easy excuse for lacklustre turnout, but I don’t know if anyone really believes that. A significant chunk of Americans are also still afraid to go to the movies in the wake of the Colorado shooting, and that should probably not be discounted.
