Dwayne Johnson Confirms Lobo Casting Rumours

A few years back, we started hearing that Lobo was one of the many DC properties that Warner Brothers was considering for a big budget live action movie. Considering the satirical and overly violent nature of the character, I’ve never been too sure what to make of the idea, but I was definitely curious to see what might come of it. Unfortunately, after Guy Ritchie left the project back in 2010, it seemed like Lobo was going to just quietly fade back into obscurity. Then, a couple of months ago the project rematerialized after gaining a new director and started building momentum again. Now this week we have learned that the movie may be close to landing a lead actor as well, but it is looking more and more like this will be end up being a family-friendly take on Lobo. “Bite me fanboy” indeed.

Word on the street is that Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is in talks for the lead role in Lobo. The possibility was first rumoured a couple of months ago but the source didn’t seem particularly reliable. Now this week Dwayne Johnson has confirmed it himself via Twitter, stating, “Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. Joel Silver and Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun.”

Johnson worked with Peyton on his last film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which turned out to be a huge hit for Warner Brothers, so it certainly makes sense that the studio would want to reunite them again. Although I don’t have a ton of confidence in The Rock’s comedic sensibilities, the bigger concern to me is the persistent rumour that Joel Silver is aiming to turn Lobo into a PG-13 adventure film. According to Ain’t It Cool News, the original script by Don Payne revolved around Lobo teaming up with a teenage tomboy and was “heavy on sass and virtually devoid of gore or profanity.” For a studio that keeps disappointing fans with most of their attempted DC Comics adaptations, this seems like another ill-advised move. What do you think, could a family-friendly version of Lobo actually work? Is The Rock a good choice to play Lobo?

I love the idea of a Lobo movie, but making it family friendly illustrates why DC can’t do anything other than Batman. All their movies seem to be motivated by money and development execs. Make a family friendly CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN. Lobo is an R-rated action comedy.
